Know your unit relationships

When designing an army it is good to know the unit relationships as shown in the diagram below. The arrows and thickness of the line indicate which type of creatures are best against each other. For example, melee creatures defeat artillery creatures soundly, whereas artillery is much weaker against flyers.

Another thing to note is that if a creature is more than two levels above another creature, it will probably not follow this diagram. A level two melee creature will not beat a level four artillery unit.

Understanding these concepts will help your army creation. It is good to have one or two core unit types in each research level. There are some exceptions; depending on the map (if distances are large between you and your opponent) you can sometimes get away without a level one creature.

Let’s take Rex’s pre-made army that is available for you to choose enabling you to play the game without having to build an army if you desire as an example: Rex has a level one melee, level two melee, level two direct range, level three melee, level three flyer, level four flyer, level four melee, level four melee and a level five melee: As you can see, Rex is slightly weak vs. direct range creatures in level four and five, being without a natural counter to them. Rex can match direct range creatures in level two and three with that level two direct range creature, but if an opponent starts bringing in level four and five direct range units, Rex is in serious trouble. A good addition to Rex’s army might be an artillery unit in level three or four, which are good counters to direct range.

Learn creature ability and stat counters

If your enemy is attacking with very high defense creatures like turtles or armadillos, counter with horns or pierce damage. These abilities negate defense to a very strong degree. If your opponent has fast creatures, counter with direct range, which can stop your opponent from using hit and run tactics.

These are just a couple of broad ways to counter your enemy’s tactics. Experimenting and learning the creature abilities will enable you to execute the best counters possible.
