Scouts

Scout - The Scout can see farther than any other unit in the field, and for this reason is the best reconnaissance unit in your battle array. Light Cavalry moves significantly faster and can harass the enemy economy, while the Scout has no armor and little resistance to attack. The Scout, though has the advantage of Auto-Explore: turn on this feature and the Scout will steadily uncover every part of the map without any micromanagement.

Any unit (including civilians) can gain the hidden Resource bonuses from discovering a set of Ruins (they just walk over them), but Scouts tend to discover the majority of them since they're afield before anyone else. For a relatively paltry investment, Scouts return both information and raw materials at a commendable rate.

Upgrades - As the game progresses, you'll still need scouting units to keep apprised of enemy movements. Spies can help a great deal but they function effectively only from a fixed position. As you move through the ages, you can upgrade to Explorer, Commando, Special Forces, and Elite Special Forces. You'll gain the use of Sabotage (irrevocable destruction) and other special abilities.
