Time at
the Library can pay off on the battlefield. The Greek national characteristics place
a premium on research, and offer great rewards to the player who makes substantial
early investment in Library techs. At the Library, Greek research speed is doubled,
as well as costing 10% less. This distinction is important, as a lot of
research is also done at other individual buildings - Towers, Forts, Resource
centers, etc.
Greek special units appear in the Heavy Cavalry line. All Heavy Cavalry units are
built at the Stable. During the Classical Age, while other players must content
themselves with the perfectly good Cataphract, the Greek can recruit Companions.
The perfectly excellent Companions will chew up opposing
Heavy Cavalry without mercy. The Medieval Age passes the bridle to the Royal
Companions; stronger in defense, and more powerful on the attack.

In the Gunpowder Age, the Greek player can bolster columns of infantry with one
of the best-known Byzantine heavy cavalry units, the Stratiotai, followed in the
Enlightenment Age by the Royal Stratiotai. Stratiotai are superb anti-heavy cavalry
units, making this 4-piece special unit line perhaps the best counter in the game
to France .
