In
the early Ages, the Russian military places heavy emphasis on the famed light horsemen
of the eastern plains, starting with the Rusiny Lancers (from what is now the Ukraine)
and of course the Cossacks and their successors, the Don Cossacks.
Players who love raiding will send forth Cossacks, aiming for "soft targets:" the
citizens, trade caravans, and other civilians
across the border. Later, the dreaded Katyusha Rockets, powerful T-80 tank, and
Red Guards Infantry generate such staggering raw combat power at relatively low
cost that a hard-hitting offensive strategy will almost plan itself. Upgrade the
Red Guards to Shock Infantry for further incentive to see the world and meet interesting
people, if you needed any.

A word about the Katyusha. Most Artillery (including other
rockets) is best used against buildings, such as Forts and Cities, which take the
longest to topple. Not so this weapon. The Katuysha's awesome power excels specifically
against enemy ground units. It's still a passkey in the door of heavily fortified
enemy cities, but deploying a few extra Katyushas when enemy infantry is on the
ground multiplies your chances for success.
Players must invade Russian territory with plenty of Supply Wagons in tow; otherwise,
their troops will fall victim to Russian Winter. Russian Winter
attrition begins as soon as enemy units cross the Russian border. An attacker
who neglects his supplies, or who tarries too long without taking a city, will find
his army slowly falling to pieces before his eyes. Yes, even without being under
attack. Russia also gathers Oil 10% faster, as well as gaining an extra Citizen
at the start of the game.
