Economic efficiency upgrades allow you to gather more of a given resource without adding more Citizens to the workforce. Research Science at the Library and these upgrades are available; research Commerce at the Library and your Commerce cap is raised for all the different Resources.

Commerce gives you room for a bigger economy, Science and efficiency upgrades let you take advantage of the extra capacity. Metal and Lumber are the other efficiency upgrades.

Spend Metal and Timber at the Granary, and in return your productivity in Food gathering will rise.
