Digital Pharma & Life Sciences Conference 2011: Focus on Green IT – Green Chemistry
Focused on Green IT – Green Chemistry the 6th Digital Pharma & Life Sciences conference took place on February 22nd 2011 at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden. One of the highlights this year: The keynote speaker Rolf Hansmann, Head of CST Architecture and New Technologies at Sanofi Aventis Pharma Germany GmbH. He demonstrated that innovation is the key to energy saving, reduction of dangerous chemicals in manufacturing and securing the disposal of hazardous substances. This is connected with the pharmaceutical industry’s special responsibility to provide a holistic approach, including services and medicinal products, and not just blockbuster products, in order to preserve health.
A further striking presentation was the introductory discourse by Ellyn Foltz, Worldwide Managing Director for the Process Manufacturing Industries at Microsoft Corporation, together with Egbert Schröer, Industry Manager Process Manufacturing at Microsoft Germany. They showed key sustainability projects of the pharmaceutical and chemical industry, reducing millions of tons of CO2 per year. A second focus was the technological evolution of cloud computing infrastructures as a fundamental step towards barrier free collaboration as well as sustainability in and through IT.
This was followed by nine presentations showing projects in production and operation as well as research and development, which demonstrate that programs to reduce the carbon footprint can successfully accompanied by improvements in performance and overall energy efficiency.
In between the presentations the attendees had agile discussions reviewing solutions and technologies shown at the exhibition hall from 18 partners. Furthermore they took the chance to inform themselves about the social project “Every Tree Counts” presented by Heike Eggers and Jérôme Dodji Fiayiwo. This reforestation program in Togo, Africa, is supported by Microsoft and was selected as the beneficiary of this years sponsoring.
Traditionally popular was the exclusive dinner at the eve of the conference. This year the conference attendees, speakers and partners enjoyed the gourmet menu and selected wines at the Hotel Nassauer Hof, exchanged with colleagues and discussed trends in Green IT with journalists, partners and customers.
The conference closed with a get-together party and the draw of three brand-new Windows Mobile Phones 7.
