Live from IDEX: Groundbreaking technology that’s changing national defense

15 February 2013 | Jennifer Steele, Senior Marketing Manager, Worldwide Public Sector

IDEX has always brought together the most innovative technology providers in the world, and the 2013 exhibition is no different. More than ever, national defense agencies are seeking ways to better protect citizens, communities and nations while struggling with tighter budgets, fewer personnel and an increasingly borderless threat environment.

Information is the key to combating the challenges of this dynamic environment, and Microsoft’s defense solutions help protect and serve with innovative, cost-effective technology that improves efficiency and productivity in support of safer societies – and delivers real results. Earlier this year, the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) signed a multi-year licensing agreement that will provide all three organizations with a single vehicle for accessing the latest Microsoft technologies – including Microsoft Office 2013, SharePoint 2013 Enterprise and Windows 8 – in support of top IT priorities in datacenter consolidation, collaboration, cyber security, mobility, cloud computing and big data. With it, they join multitudes of other organizations utilizing Microsoft’s flexible, agile, efficient and adaptive IT solutions to achieve mission success.

It’s an unprecedented agreement that demonstrates how defense agencies are looking to transform military and humanitarian operations around the globe with modern tools and services. This year, Microsoft is also pleased to be joined by some extraordinary partners offering the latest in land, sea and air defense in support of this critical mission:

• Any defense operator, whether in the field or in the command center, knows the importance of secure unified communications. Twisted Pair’s patented WAVE software, currently deployed by all branches of the U.S. military and a growing number of coalition forces, allows military personnel using smartphones and tablets to securely connect to existing Land Mobile Radio (LMR) infrastructure and enables existing infrastructure to expand and securely transmit critical voice and data. The result is secure, real-time collaboration anywhere, on any device, for maximum interoperability that eliminates line of sight issues.

• Apps partner Key 2 Business is showcasing its Armament Program Management Systems (AMPS), an information management solution designed to maximize efficiency for Ministries of Defence, along with several other public safety apps available for Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface tablet.

• Even in the harshest environments, Dell™ Latitude™ Rugged Mobility products provide world-class performance that allows defense organizations to maintain operability and secure mission success. With sunlight-readable displays, hot-swappable media bay modules, stealth mode, vehicle docking, and an array of customizable solution elements, this ruggedized hardware’s “go anywhere” productivity, full suite of wireless options, and business-class control means secure, uncompromised functionality for ultimate reliability in extreme conditions.
