The Smart City Expo in Barcelona just ended, and I can see why city leaders from around the world attend this event. It’s always inspiring to hear the stories from city officials who are finding new ways to use technology. The conference provided a way for them to share their success stories.
One of the most interesting stories is from the coastal city of Hamburg, Germany, a Microsoft CityNext showcase city. There, the Port Authority is rolling out new mobile devices and software, freeing its approximately 1,800 workers to collaborate from anywhere in the 7,000-hectare port, and significantly increasing its employees’ productivity. Read all about it on the Microsoft EU Supporting Cities Hub.
The innovation doesn’t stop there. The city of Hamburg’s Ministry of Finance has also reduced paper consumption and shortened approval cycles with an automated Microsoft SharePoint–based solution, saving the department a projected $14.3 million over 5 years.
