Milwaukee County, the largest in Wisconsin, has 3,375 employees representing 40 departments and divisions with diverse lines of business. Staff members are spread out over 1,190 square miles. Things like access to email and easy communication between departments are a key part of a successful collaboration strategy. That’s why after experiencing some inefficiencies on Lotus Notes, Milwaukee County saw the need for a new communication system that would allow its team to easily connect, ensure the needed security elements, and provide the flexibility to build a successful approach to streamlining communication. The county’s Chief Technology Officer and Director of Technology Operations, Nicholas Wojciechowski, chose Microsoft Office 365 for its email communication.
Milwaukee County is not alone in making this type of choice, based on flexibility, security, and reliability. It’s just one of many state and local government organizations across the U.S. working hard to ensure that their employees communicate better and can get their work done faster. With this high bar for communications, governments like Milwaukee County still face a number of unique challenges, such as integrating new solutions with existing investments as well as meeting important government standards and regulations, such as CJIS and HIPAA.
According to Mr. Wojciechowski, the fact that the Office 365 approach meets the important compliance standards and regulations of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) meant that Milwaukee County could trust that its data—whether it’s specific to health, law enforcement, or citizen services—is secure. This fact alone puts Mr. Wojciechowski’s mind at ease and allows him to move on to addressing other important needs as part of his technology leadership with the County.
Over the last 18 months, Microsoft has helped many state and local government organizations like Milwaukee County move to the cloud. Milwaukee County’s success with the improved communication and collaboration brought about by Office 365 holds great potential for the future of communication and collaboration within Milwaukee County. And thanks to the initial deployment’s success, the county is looking forward to rolling out additional solutions, namely Yammer, SharePoint Online, and Windows devices in support of their long-term technology upgrades.
Our work with Milwaukee County is part of the Microsoft CityNext program to empower people—whether governments, citizens, or businesses—to transform their cities and their future.
