The Windows 8 apps universe is growing all the time, and there are some tremendous resources available and in development for the national defense and public safety community. With tools like these, users can securely access even more data and features at their fingertips for better productivity than ever before.

STARLIMS Crime Capture Lite

The incredible STARLIMS Crime Capture Lite app can be used by law enforcement agents to thoroughly capture and document crime scenes with audio, video, photographs, and more using just their mobile device. Officers can organize crime scene photos by location and display collected items within the location. Text fields and drop down menus allow investigators to quickly capture other important scene information, and the GPS feature can be used to auto-populate scene address. The app also offers separate tabs specifically configured to document vehicles, victims, and persons involved make data collection quick, easy, and streamlined. It can also generate a “Collected Items” report which includes the scene details and records the chain of custody transactions.

The U.S. Army Weapon Systems Handbook

This app, built by Booz Allen Hamilton for the U.S. Army Strategic Communication directorate, enables automated and streamlined delivery of the 2013 U.S. Army Weapon Systems Handbook. The app features the weapon systems that are in development and being fielded by the Army, and using an intuitive interface, users can access insight into each system’s mission, acquisition phase, and purpose. No wonder it’s currently the top free app in the government category of the Windows 8 App Store!

CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection)

This app provides quick and easy access to online safety information and advice from The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), a U.K. police agency dedicated to protecting children from harm both online and in the real world. It includes a range of engaging and award-winning education films, website links and social media channels that provide advice and guidance to help children of all ages stay safe online and is share best practice techniques with the wider child protection community. Users can also report suspected child sex offender activity directly to CEOP via the app.

Modularis MVP Command Center

The Modularis Mobile Video Platform (MVP), first featured at the Microsoft Worldwide Public Safety Symposium 2010, now offers an amazing app to give law enforcement agencies and emergency responders even more power, flexibility, security, and heightened situational awareness. The MVP app allows police commanders the ability to view the real-time status of every vehicle in their command fleet, including details such as speed, GPS, microphone and recording status, and screenshots from the vehicles’ onboard cameras. Police commanders can also send remote control commands through the app to operate vehicle systems such as the siren, light bar, video recording, and video camera operation.

Esri ArcGIS Online App

The ArcGIS app provides a preview of features available for the ArcGIS Online mapping platform on Windows 8. Users can explore a gallery of compelling maps that showcase relevant demographic, commercial, and environmental topics, and use the app to view, navigate, and learn more.

360 eWorker

Software Innovation’s 360° eWorker offers a whole new way for public agencies to manage information, cases and documents from their Windows 8 devices. With an engaging and easy-to-use interface and direct access to Public 360°, the eWorker app allows more flexibility and productivity than ever before. Many of the familiar functions from the desktop menus in 360° have their own functionality in 360° eWorker, such as the ability to view details of current cases, read documents, retrieve and download documents from 360º, see an overview of progress on tasks, and access all meeting documentation, all while entirely mobile.

We’ll continue to spotlight more great apps as they become available in the Windows 8 store. If you have an idea for an app you’d love to see, let us know at safetydefense@microsoft.com.
