Microsoft’s contribution to our customers isn’t always about software and service provision. During the 2013 holiday season, Microsoft worked with Grady Memorial Hospital, a very large public health provider in Atlanta, to improve the experience of patients in the burn unit. These patients (roughly 30% children) are often in the care of Grady for long periods of time and it’s important for them and their families to have opportunities to spend some of their time in leisure diversions.
Members of the IT leadership team at Grady, including CIO Debbie Cancilla and Director Sean O’Conner, worked with a group of Microsoft Store and Microsoft State and Local Government personnel to discuss ways Microsoft might be able to help. We concluded that Xboxes would provide the type of diversionary entertainment needed.
On December 20, 2013 Microsoft delivered Xbox 360s and accompanying mobile cases to Grady as shown in this short WXIA TV Random Acts of Kindness video. This allows Grady to easily move the units from room to room so that as many as possible of the burn unit patients can enjoy them. Microsoft also provided Grady Xboxes for usage in waiting rooms so that patient family members and friends can have an opportunity for some fun.
