Two ways that health organizations can better engage those they serve using HealthVault

That was an example of how a consumer like me can use HealthVault. But what about use cases for health organizations?

Whenever I meet with customers, they always tell me that they’re looking for more ways to engage with those they serve. They want to improve their relationships and connect with people in innovative ways so they can provide better service and help them be healthier.

That’s where HealthVault can help. It’s a flexible platform, so whether you’re an HMO, MoH, provider, payer, pharmacy, or clinical lab, you can take advantage of HealthVault to improve patient engagement.

I’ll start with two examples today and share more here on my blog in the months to come.

  • If you’re an HMO or MoH, one of your biggest challenges is reining in costs related to treating chronic conditions. You probably know the statistics all too well: In the US, for example, 75 percent of healthcare dollars go to the treatment of chronic diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So you’re likely looking for ways to help your doctors and patients improve chronic condition management.

Now, imagine you could provide your physicians with a solution that helps patients monitor their condition at home or while they’re on the go. For example, your physicians could offer their hypertension patients a mobile blood pressure monitor that works with an app that runs on top of HealthVault to track their daily blood pressure measurements. It can be set up so that the patient’s care team can also see the measurements, and alerts are sent when readings are outside a target range. So now instead of the patient and physician only tracking blood pressure readings taken at the doctor’s office every few months, they can track them more consistently and frequently to catch any health issues early and help prevent problems down the road.

  • If you’re a provider, one of your biggest patient populations is probably pregnant women. As an organization, how can you engage with these moms-to-be and their families to offer them a better experience? Today, when a woman comes in for a prenatal ultrasound, most providers send her home with a black-and-white printout. But what if you could take that a step further and upload the video of the ultrasound to her HealthVault account? Then she’d be able to have it as a keepsake stored safely and securely in her online personal health record. And if she chooses, she could share it with family and friends on her social networks. Whether your organization offers it for a fee, or free of charge, it could be a way to establish a stronger connection and loyalty with this large population of patients and their families.

These are just a couple scenarios of how health organizations can engage those they serve in new and efficient ways to foster stronger connections and improve population health.
