New Models for eSourcing and Topic-Based Authoring Win 2012 Microsoft Life Sciences Innovation Awards

​Yesterday, Microsoft honored the winners of the 2012 Microsoft Life Sciences Innovation Awards, which recognizes health organizations that are using Microsoft-based technology to reduce redundancies and costs, to ultimately fight serious ailments and bring therapeutic breakthroughs to market faster. For the sixth consecutive year, the program recognizes both customers and partners who are uniquely positioned to improve the quality of health through their innovative use of technology.
With the vast array of health IT solutions in life sciences, it is no surprise that we received many great award entries. This year’s winners were selected by a panel of industry experts and chosen because their solution represents a measurable breakthrough in the areas of scientific collaboration, clinical trial and discovery processes, and improved end user’s experience.
The following are the recipients of the 2012 Microsoft Life Sciences Innovation Awards:
  • Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) worked with Clinical Ink to migrate to an electronic clinical trial platform to reduce drug development costs. Prior to implementing a solution, Novartis relied largely on paper to document physician/patient interactions during clinical trials, resulting in inefficiencies, which contributed to the billions spent annually on drug development. Novartis partnered with Clinical Ink to Deploy SureSource®, an esource technology that replaces paper forms with electronic documents accessed via a Microsoft Windows-based tablet. This technology allowed Novartis to maintain the workflow and mobility of paper while allowing fast, secure capture, validation and transmission of clinical data. Novartis was able to improve their ability to monitor/analyze safety data and dramatically cut costs. Further, nearly 80% of the activity performed on-site is now done remotely.
  • Sanofi is dramatically streamlining their documentation processes and increasing overall efficiency using DITA Exchange technology, implemented with the help of ArborSys. Existing processes and resources needed to prepare, review, approve and publish information into multiple formats for regulatory agencies, public databases and external partners were time consuming and sometimes caused unnecessary workload and delays, and mark-up and navigation of documents were cumbersome. In order to solve the issues, Sanofi is implementing a topic-based Structured Content Management (SCM) system, which leverages Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise and SQL Server 2008, among other Microsoft technologies, to address content management and documentation deliverables across the product development life cycle. The end result - Sanofi is able to accelerate and increase the quality of submission documents and also minimize risk through improved consistency of messaging. These savings are dramatic. In one early case, the new process used 93% less time than before, which, in a scenario involving over 4,000 documents, translates to savings of over a million dollars in costs plus weeks in document creation time.
  • The healthcare environment was evolving rapidly across Europe and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) incorporated significant training activities throughout their sales force to maximize the company’s performance in order to stay competitive. BMS worked with Data Intelligence’s solution PharmaCOACH, its sales force coaching system, to enable coaching engagements and self-assessments to be completed and analyzed securely at all organizational levels. PharmaCOACH uses the most recent Microsoft technologies and is supported by Silverlight 5 and SQL Server 2008. The improvements in sales coaching and self development embedded within PharmaCOACH have been a significant contributor to BMS UK being able to deliver 13.4% growth during this time of significant change, 16.2% above budget target and the leader across the European Region.
