The team from the CUHK won the Hong Kong Regional Championship in the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2004 Competition and represented Hong Kong to participate the finals in Brazil in July 2004. ![]() Their Project
The team has creatively designed and implemented a mobile, multimodal and multilingual system called "Portable Shopping Companion" (PSC) which is a distributed software system that runs on a mobile PDA client. The system supports bilingual (English and Chinese) speech recognition and text-to-speech synthesis, automatic bi-directional English-Chinese machine translation, speaker verification (i.e. voiceprint security) and location-awareness using Wi-Fi hotspots. The system enables the user (shopper) to browse through product webpages, locate stores in an arcade with the product in stock and help the user navigate a big arcade for particular stores. The system can also serve as an interpreter between an English-speaking tourist and a Chinese speaking salesman using real-time speech-to-speech translation technologies. The team from the City U HK won the 1st runner-up in Imagine Cup 2004 with their project "Home Inventory Tracer (HIT)" ![]() Their Project
Home Inventory Tracer (hit) includes three components namely Smart Bin, Smart Plan and Smart Order. Smart Bin detects products that have been consumed, then Smart Plan works out a shopping list and finally Smart Order orders products from supermarkets.HIT features no manually input of information on consumed product, but the key technology of HIT relies on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) which may be likely accepted by supermarkets later. Student from IVE won the 2nd Runner for the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2004 Competition in Hong Kong with her project "Pocket Profit Maker 2004". ![]() Her Project
Pocket Profit Maker 2004 is a business intelligent system, on a pocket PC, that enables a user to access data such as XML files or databases from Microsoft SQL Servers though a wireless local area network (LAN). The software enables a user to perform a full data analysis cycle using the software, i.e. the user can access data through web services, and then perform data mining and visualization. | ![]()
