- Leaked copies of Windows® 7 RC launched on May 5 contain Trojan
Some leaked copies of Windows 7 RC were found containing Trojan horse. The self-extracting Setup.exe, which was a container, included two files naming setup.exe and codec.exe. The latter file was identified as a Trojan horse which downloaded fake security software, dubbed "scareware", to PCs and installed a rootkit to hide from legitimate anti-virus products.
Windows 7 RC is not the first leaked software found to harbor attack code. In January 2009, pirated copies of Apple Inc.'s "new iWork '09" suite also contained a Trojan horse that hijacked Macs.
Windows 7 RC was officially launched on May 5. Users are advised to download the pre-release software from the official website.
