Calyon, Crédit Agricole Group's corporate and investment bank
Leading Bank Deploys BizTalk Server 2004 on Windows Platform to Integrate Mission-critical UNIX and AS/400-based Systems

Publication Date: Wednesday, November 16, 2005

Calyon Asia Pacific in Hong Kong deployed a Microsoft® Windows®-based solution to automate its Real-time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system by integrating it with its backend infrastructure. With Microsoft BizTalk® Server 2004 and the BizTalk Accelerator for SWIFT running on Windows Server™ 2003 and connecting to SQL Server™ 2000, it rapidly integrated with existing systems and achieved optimal security and reliability more cost-effectively than comparable UNIX-based solutions.

Leveraging Microsoft Consulting Services' in-depth experience in the financial services sector, the bank achieved fast, problem-free deployment within one month. Calyon Asia Pacific has now automated its RTGS processes to save time and eliminate errors, minimized IT administration, and acheived rapid return on investment.

Calyon, Crédit Agricole Group's corporate and investment bank, has operations in 60 countries.

Part of the Crédit Agricole Group, Calyon is a leading corporate and investment bank with operations in 60 countries. Its Hong Kong regional headquarters oversees a 13-country Asian network.

Regionally, the bank has implemented electronic straight-through-processing solutions, including the Real-time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system to execute interbank funds transfers as they happen throughout the day, integrating with the SWIFT payment system. To further enhance local payments processing and compliance, Calyon Asia Pacific in Hong Kong wanted to integrate the RTGS system, which it runs on an IBM AS/400 server, with its UNIX-based backend infrastructure, and eliminate manual processes.

"We decided to select an RTGS automation solution based on its business value and not restrict ourselves to a UNIX solution," explains Fabrice Garambois, Chief Operating Officer of Calyon Asia Pacific.

Calyon Asia Pacific thus undertook a detailed comparison of available technologies, pitting a UNIX-based solution from a finance-dedicated technology supplier against a Windows-based solution from Microsoft.

The bank found that the Windows solution could effectively meet its integration needs and provide optimal security and reliability more cost-effectively than comparable UNIX-based solutions. Calyon Asia Pacific was also satisfied with the depth of Microsoft's experience in the financial services industry.

"We were initially hesitant about using a vendor that didn't specialize only in the financial services sector. However, I was surprised by how well Microsoft understood our business and also by how much more flexible it was than other suppliers we had worked with in the past," Michael Chan, IT Director of Calyon Asia Pacific, recalls.

Calyon Asia Pacific thus elected to deploy a Windows platform on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, with Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004 to integrate its UNIX backend and RTGS system, and SQL Server 2000 as the underlying database.

Extending the capabilities of BizTalk Server to meet its particular needs in international payments clearing, the bank also deployed the Microsoft BizTalk Accelerator for SWIFT. Built by Microsoft in conjunction with the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT), it provides the most comprehensive, reliable, and secure delivery of financial messaging using the SWIFT format and network.

At Calyon Asia Pacific, the backend systems submit requests to the RTGS server in FIN format. These requests are transformed into XML format in the SWIFT Disassembler within BizTalk Server and relayed to the RTGS server as RTGS Messages via Host Integration Server 2004. The RTGS server sends acknowledgements, confirmations, and daily reports back through BizTalk server in a similar fashion.

Fast, trouble-free deployment
To optimize deployment, Calyon Asia Pacific engaged Microsoft Consulting Services (MCS) to handle the implementation. "MCS service was excellent. The implementation was fast and problem-free; the system was handed over to us within a month of our decision to deploy it. A smooth deployment was vital because we were handling trillions of dollars in payment through RTGS throughout the deployment period and any disruption could have resulted in significant penalties," says Chan.

Now that Calyon Asia Pacific has implemented the Windows platform with BizTalk Server in Hong Kong, it expects to extend the solution to other locations in the region, including India, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

"Each country in which we operate will make different demands on the BizTalk Server solution, with unique payment systems and processing requirements, for example. Now that we have experienced the strength and flexibility of the Windows platform and the workflow tools in BizTalk Server, we know we will be able to rapidly deploy and customize this solution throughout our regional network," Garambois says.

"As we have mainly had a UNIX environment for critical Capital Markets applications, deploying the Windows platform is a breakthrough. With a low initial investment and rapid deployment, and its ease of use and administration, we have achieved return on investment very quickly," explains Garambois.

Automated processes
Prior to installing BizTalk Server, the bank's RTGS payment processes were manually checked. "By automating our RTGS processes with BizTalk Server, we are saving two or three hours a day on manual checking, reducing our reconciliation workload by 30%, and eliminating the possibility of mistakes due to human error. This helps to reduce penalties arising from delayed payment, and frees up staff for more value-added work," Garambois says.

Zero administration
"Using UNIX, managing the database and operating system can be a burden. With the user-friendly Windows interface, we have minimized administrative work, particularly for BizTalk Server, which has required zero administration," adds Chan.

In addition, the bank appreciates that it is easy to find qualified Windows network administrators and that BizTalk Server-specific training courses are readily available and comparatively low-cost.

Regulatory compliance
The BizTalk Server solution also helps Calyon Asia Pacific to improve its internal processes to help it more efficiently fulfil its obligations under the international capital adequacy standards known as Basel II. "We have more control over our processes and experience fewer delays, so have fewer penalties to report," Garambois concludes.
