Vista's almost here. It's the first major revision of the Windows desktop OS in five years, and yet a reading of the blogs and the press would lead you to conclude (wrongly) that there are only two new features: a new user interface and something called User "Account Control."
But Vista's way more than that! For example, it not only lets you un-delete files that you've deleted ... it lets you recover old VERSIONS of those files. It'll not only back up your whole operating system while it's running ... it stores it as a Virtual PC-type virtual hard disk. It lets you centralize event logs with its new Event Viewer. And it's got a ton of things that you WOULDN'T notice, because they're out of sight, under the hood.
That all sounds like great stuff for users, but what about us support folks? How will we get quickly up-to-speed on what's coming in Vista? With this Vista preconference session, of course! Windows expert, journalist, best-selling author and veteran technical educator Mark Minasi takes you a fast-paced look at everything new Vista-wise. This talk focuses not on the "eye candy" of the new user interface but instead on the part of Vista that most support people will care about. We'll spend a day together understanding the new Vista features that your users are going to want to use, and to help you get ready to support that stuff. (And, of course, we hope to teach you enough about the new goodies that the users don't take you by surprise!)

We will showcase the latest technologies, including advances with Window Vista and 2007 Office system that we are delivering to enable the People-Ready Business.
Database Mirroring is one of the main SQL Server Always On Technologies that can help minimize planned and unplanned downtime, thereby maximizing the availability of the database. Database Mirroring transports the changes in the production database to a mirror database, either synchronously or asynchronously. The mirror database can reside either in the same data center to provide a high-availability solution, or in a remote data center to provide a disaster-recovery solution. Business requirements such as service-level agreements and performance, as well as technical factors such as log generation rate, network throughput, and I/O throughput, influence the deployment of database mirroring. We discuss the best practices and performance considerations for implementing Database Mirroring.

Every day we log into our Windows systems. But what really happens when we do? How DO our workstations and our domain controllers exchange logon information without revealing our passwords? Security hardening guides talk about how scary old-style LM, NTLM and NTLMv2 logons are, but why EXACTLY do they say that -- particularly when it's practically impossible to keep all of the old-style logins from happening even in the most modern network? How DOES AD's favorite logon protocol, Kerberos, work? How is it more secure than the old guys, and where should you look more closely at securing it?
Everyone wants to harden their systems and Windows supplies a wealth of really neat group policy and Registry settings, but many people still haven't taken those simple hardening steps because, first, they don't understand them entirely and, second, they fear compatibility problems. Join expert Windows explainer and security geek Mark Minasi in an in-depth look at how Windows logins work, how they can not work (and how you can fix them) as well as how to better secure them. After seeing this talk, you will have NO excuses for not tweaking those group policy security settings!

When system availability is impacted it can be costly... could it have been avoided? It depends on what caused your system to be unavailable. Was it technology? Probably not! Most system downtime is caused by human error. OK, definitely NOT all - and yes, hardware fails. However, the most likely of hardware failures are easily minimized through some form of relatively standard redundancy (i.e., RAID). But - what happens when users incorrectly modify the wrong data, or even worse, when someone with higher privileges drops a table? While it seems like it would be easy to just "restore that table" the problem(s) are really larger than that. As a result, appropriate preventative features should be used and then recovery must begin. How can you recover quickly and with the smallest impact to production? Come to this session to find out! Features discussed: DDL Triggers, Event Notifications, Agent Alerts, Partial Database Availability, Online Piecemeal Restore and Database Snapshots. While all of these topics can be discussed when hardware fails, this session focuses more on isolated damage and recovery. If you think that your system is safe from human error...then you definitely need to be here!

For most of the history of computing, operating systems have lived in their own little bubbles of trust. Every part of an operating system pretty much assumed that every other part was exactly what it claimed to be and performed only what it claimed it could do. Recent attacks, though, have shown that such implicit trust is no longer suitable for computers that connect to hostile environments. A far more trustworthy operating system is one where the principle of least privilege is enforced throughout and where all operations are verified before taking action -- seriously reducing the chances of malware taking over the operating system and thereby improving the operating system's integrity. Windows Vista will ship with several new system integrity technologies, including code integrity, secure startup, service hardening, mandatory integrity control, and Internet Explorer protected mode. In this session, Steve Riley explores how these technologies work to thwart malware's attempts to take over your computer.

Slow or inconsistent application performance frustrates users and hurts productivity. Window Vista includes a number of breakthrough technologies that will provide customers with a much more consistently responsive experience. In this session, we discuss all of the performance enhancements in Windows Vista, and help you understand how you can take advantage of these new features to optimize client performance. Windows Vista provides a new, more efficient model for memory management, allows I/O access to be prioritized, and takes advantage of new hardware to increase the effective size of the memory cache without adding RAM. SuperFetch is a major advance in memory management which ensures that available memory is populated with the most relevant content based on how the PC is actually used. Windows Vista performance is further improved through hardware innovations such as Hybrid Hard Drives and External Memory Devices. Hybrid hard drives represent an evolution in hard drive capabilities, improving battery life and reliability as well as performance. External Device Technology allows users to take advantage of common devices (such as USB drives) to improve system performance during memory intensive tasks.

ASP.NET 2.0, Visual Studio 2005 and IIS 7 each provides much improved administration and management support, and dramatically improved performance. This session includes discussions of: ASP.NET "Atlas", Data Controls, SQL Output Caching, Master Pages, Themes/Skins, Personalization, Web Parts, Membership, Role Management and Security Controls, Web Site Administration Tool, IIS 7 Management Tool, Site Pre-Compilation and the significantly improved Visual Studio 2005 Web experience.
In SQL Server 2005, both T-SQL and SQLCLR procedures can use Try-Catch constructs to intercept and process exceptional conditions. This is a big change for both server and client/middle-tier processing, as client and middle-tier received and processed all errors directly from SQL Server. In addition, both T-SQL and SQLCLR error handling don't catch every type of error or allow the ability to directly rethrow all errors to reproduce SQL Server 2005 behavior. This session looks at the mechanism in-depth and provides a comprehensive and consistant error handling strategy that works for all procedural code and clients.

Please note the agenda above is the most up to date on-site agenda.
For all the breakouts, the session code is an indication of their technical level. For example DEV429 means it's a level 400 session, while MSG205 means it's level 200.
Level 100 (Introductory) Through technical sessions, you will be introduced to product and technology features, functions, and benefits. Business sessions will introduce you to product functionality and include demonstrations of end-user tips. You may also learn how and why to invest in a certain product or technology.
Level 200 (Intermediate) Attendees should have Level 100 knowledge of the product or technology because these sessions drill down further into a topic than introductory sessions. These sessions often include product demonstrations, code samples, best practices, and high-level troubleshooting techniques.
Level 300 (Experienced) These sessions cover advanced material and assume Level 200 knowledge, an in-depth understanding of features in a real-world environment, and strong coding skills. These sessions provide you with a detailed technical overview of a subset of product or technology features, covering architecture, performance, migration, deployment, and development.
Level 400 (Advanced/Expert) These sessions assume a deep level of technical knowledge and experience and a detailed, thorough understanding of the topic. They offer expert-to-expert interaction and coverage of such specialized topics as custom code, scripts, application solution development, and architect infrastructure designs and solutions.
