Are you the kind of security person who enables a setting just because it's there? Do your users constantly seek ways to bypass all your fine-tuned security, just so they can do their jobs? Every security decision your organization makes ought to consider the security-usability (or even the security-usability-cost) tradeoff. While perfect security seems an admirable goal, in reality we must remember that usability often will trump our strongest desires. If people can't get work done, they'll either circumvent the security (without understanding they just created new attack vectors) or your company will simply lose out to your competitors. Steve Riley discusses several examples of real-world tradeoffs and helps you learn how to navigate the tradeoff in your own organization.

When system availability is impacted it can be costly. Could it have been avoided? It depends on what caused your system to be unavailable. Was it technology? Probably not! Most system downtime is caused by human error. OK, definitely NOT all - and yes, hardware fails! However, the most likely hardware failures are easily minimized through some form of relatively standard redundancy, i.e., RAID. But what happens when users incorrectly modify the wrong data, or even worse, when someone with higher privileges drops a table? While it seems like it would be easy to just 'restore that table', the problem(s) are really larger than that. As a result, appropriate preventative features should be used and then recovery must begin. How can you recover quickly and with the smallest impact to production? Come to this session to find out! Features discussed include: Online Index Operations, Partial Database Availability, Online Piecemeal Restore and for prevention/monitoring - Data Definition Language (DDL) Triggers, Event notifications, and Agent Alerts. While many of these topics can be discussed when hardware fails, which you will see first-hand in this session when some hardware fails during the demos, this session focuses more on online operations and isolating objects for better availability and recovery. If you think that your system is safe from human error then you definitely need to be here!

Relax for a moment. Let your mind wander to thoughts of your corporate network-with its myriad authentication schemes, its haphazard collection of client computers in various states of (non)conformance, its proliferation of access methods, its data centers with too many ways in and out. Feel like you want to just burn it all down and start over? Well, perhaps you should-and when you do, you can implement something that's simpler, more secure, well managed, and less expensive. Over the years, Steve Riley has hinted at this idea, advocating the demise of the traditional corporate network, with its no longer useful distinction between "inside" and "outside."Instead, organizations should move toward using the Internet as their infrastructure, where all clients and a physically and electronically fortified data center live "live on the 'net." The question, then, is how to build this data center? Effective security and management are absolutely essential to realize this vision. In this session Steve shows how combining the Microsoft ForeFront family of security products with the System Center family of management solutions provides the necessary foundation for building your data center of the future-today. Don't delay, because your business competitors are already doing it!

Imagine an application that adjusts its behaviour as it learns about the needs and characteristics of its users: for instance, a user interface that knows what the user is most likely to do, or select next. Or, perhaps, a Web store that can predict a shipment delivery failure even before the order has been placed, and warns the user. How about software that knows it is being abused and is on the brink of being hopelessly attacked by a criminal? In these three cases, and many others, the traditional approach would require you to think of all the circumstances in advance, and to encode them as some form of logic. Naturally, that is an impossible task to complete. Data Mining offers us a glimpse of a world to come: your application will self-trace its past behaviour in order to discover these patterns for you. Your code, in turn, will use the ever-evolving data mining model to perform predictions based on which way the application would react. While the world of academia has been thinking of similar approaches, notably in the Artificial Intelligence research, it has only recently become an everyday possibility to harness the power of Data Mining to a similar extent. Come to this session if you would like to see where the future is headed. This session introduces the key concepts of data mining and its algorithms for the benefit of those not yet familiar with the field, but the bulk of the presentation concentrates on the as yet unexplored world of building more intelligent applications.

Integration Services provides enterprise level capabilities for your organization's Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) needs. However, your organization's on-going ETL maintenance and development costs will soar without common standards, building blocks and templates. An ETL Framework addresses these needs by providing a solid foundation that includes: centralized logging and reporting, data exception handling and defect analysis, data profiling, data and execution lineage, centralized/flexible configuration management, ETL state management and templates for common ETL scenarios. In this session, we briefly present an overview of an Enterprise ETL Framework and then interactively drill down into the details by using a reference implementation developed by the author. Integration Services best practices are also covered throughout this session.
SQL Server 2005 contains a variety of features for building systems that scale-out to multiple servers. This includes traditional features, such as distributed partitioned views, and new features, such as SQL Server Service Broker and peer-to-peer replication. Because there are many choices, it may be difficult to decide which feature or features provide the best solution for a given application. This presentation focuses on how to implement the solution that you choose, as well as information on deciding on the best feature or features that meet your application's design criteria.
The new Excel Services in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 puts Excel spreadsheet calculation and rendering on the server. It is built on the robust, scalable, and secure SharePoint platform. This lab contains a series of six hands-on exercises which demonstrate the key features of Windows PowerShell version 1.0. Windows PowerShell is Microsoft's new shell environment and scripting language. This lab is intended to give you a relatively quick, broad overview of Windows PowerShell features. The exercises do not cover a comprehensive list of low-level language features and syntax such as you'd find in a Reference Guide document; however these exercises cover more detail than you'd find in a typical Quick Start document. After this lab, you will have a solid grasp of exactly what Windows PowerShell is and how you can use PowerShell to simplify a wide range of IT administration and software development tasks.

There are many reasons for partitioning your data and indexes in SQL Server 2005. One of those reasons is that moving data in and out of a partition can be more efficient that any other type of data movement. The way that SQL Server 2005 keeps track of the internal storage of partitioned data allows data to be moved as a metadata only operation. In this session, we look at the metadata for table, index, and partition storage to explore exactly what happens when a partition is moved. Looking at the internals of partition storage also allows us to understand the reasons for some of the restrictions on how and when partitions can be moved, and to design our data movement processes much more reliably.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services includes a complete re-architecture of the Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) engine from Microsoft SQL Server 2000. This is the second of two independent presentations that focus on the performance and scalability aspects of the Analysis Services architecture. These presentations cover each aspect of cube design in detail and provide specific guidance on how to design for optimal performance. The first presentation covers cube design and storage while this presentation covers MDX and calculations. In this presentation, we take a look under the hood of the OLAP formula engine to understand how MDX queries and calculations are evaluated, along with a sneak peek into some performance related work coming in the next release. Then we take common business problems and show MDX can be utilized to solve them while keeping query performance under control. Finally we point out common gotchas for poor performance in MDX and best practices to address them. These principles and practices should be a necessary foundation for any organization embarking on a large-scale business intelligence project based on Analysis Services 2005.
