How to Install Windows Vista Service Service Pack 1 (SP1)?

Step 1:
Users can type "Windows Update" under the "Start Search" box. Then "Windows Update" will list under the "Programs" column.

Step 1:
For users with Windows Update set to “install updates automatically” the download of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will happen in the background.


  • Once the download is complete, a notification that "New updates are available" will be presented.
  • The user must click on the pop-up notification, which will take them to the Windows Update control panel.
Please click "Check for updates" on the left top column.


Step 2:
In order to initiate the installation of the service pack, the user must click Install updates or View available updates.


Step 3:
If the user chooses to click "View Available Updates", this screen will appear. The user must click "Install" to continue. If the user clicked "Install" on the previous page, they will skip this screen and advance directly to the next step.


Step 4:
  • After a moment, the Windows Vista SP1 installation welcome page will be displayed.
  • The user must click Next to continue. This will check for free disk space and whether the computer is running on battery power.


Step 5:
If the check succeeded, the user will be presented with the license terms. Users must check the I accept the license terms checkbox before clicking Next to continue.
The service pack will begin to install...


Step 6:
  • Eventually, the user will be prompted to restart the computer.
  • The computer will continue to install Vista SP1. During the process, it may restart itself a few times. The user will see a series of screens during the installation. This will take from 20 to 40 minutes to complete.


After the process is complete, the user will be able to logon to their Windows Vista SP1 computer!
