Management packs are the building blocks that extend System Center Operations Manager 2007 management capabilities to operating systems, applications, and other technology components. A management pack (MP) contains best-practice knowledge for discovering, monitoring, troubleshooting, reporting on, and resolving problems related to a specific technology component. Management packs include health models that are based on the Systems Definition Model (SDM) that you can use to analyze the performance, availability, configuration, and security inputs—plus the status of related components—to determine overall health status. MPs are available for Microsoft and third-party operating systems, applications, and devices.
Microsoft provides MPs for more than 60 Microsoft products and Windows operating system components. The same teams that develop the products also develop the management packs, so the information that an MP includes is derived from the most knowledgeable source. All the Microsoft MPs are included for licensed users of System Center Operations Manager 2007.
In addition, Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 4.5 provides a management pack that has been customized to monitor Microsoft Provisioning System (MPS) events, alerts, performance, and other Hosted Messaging and Collaboration services. Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 4.5 also includes service-availability monitoring in the form of an application programming interface (API) that makes it possible for service providers to retrieve availability data from Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Pack and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Management Pack using the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Software Development Kit (SDK). The availability data reflects the health status of Exchange Server or Windows SharePoint Services.
