Operating System Installation Discs
Throughout the years, Microsoft has employed a number of anti-piracy technologies. As our programs have evolved through different versions, so have the related installation disc anti-counterfeiting technologies. Please see below for details on the different versions of retail disc features.

Wavy Edge Copper Hologram CD (released summer 2004)

Wavy Edge: Look for the area at the edge of the disc where the copper color has a clean, wavy effect.

Dynamic Stereogram: The high resolution three-dimensional hologram of the Windows logo has the Windows XP default background. The Windows flag waves as the CD is tilted. The stereogram is found within a smaller framed area on the face of the CD.

Security Patch: Located at the bottom of the DVD, the word "Microsoft" changes to "GENUINE" as the DVD is tilted.

Background Hologram: The background hologram shows vibrant color and 3D effects as the CD is tilted. The copper holographic material is embedded within the CD. It is not a sticker. The face of the CD is surrounded by a clean, wavy edge.

Etched Text: Text will appear to be etched on top of the background holographic image and will shift from a light shade to a dark one as the CD is tilted.

Feathered Edge Copper Hologram CD (released fall 2003)

Feathered Edge: Look for the transition area at the edge of the disc where the copper color transitions smoothly to a silver color.
