Satyam Auto Components Limited (SACL) is one of the largest manufacturers of body frames and fuel tanks for motorcycles in India.

SACL was in need of an integrated business solution to connect all its departments. It wanted to improve business process efficiency within the organization.

The implementation of Microsoft Dynamics - Nav has enabled online connectivity between the various departments at SACL. It has improved demand fulfilment, planning and co-ordination with its customers. The SACL finance department has seen an improvement in the existing cost control and treasury management. There has also been significant improvement in materials, purchase, production and stores resulting in increased profitability.
 

Situation
India is the second largest manufacturer of two-wheelers in the world. It stands next only to Japan and China in terms of the number of two-wheelers produced and domestic sales.

The two-wheeler industry has been growing despite the evolving four-wheeler segment. The two-wheeler industry has grown at an average pace of 15-16 per cent in the last four years. The sale of motorcycles has increased by 14.9 per cent from 3.76 million to around 4.32 million in 2003 - 2004. The market is expected to continue to grow at the rate of 17 per cent per annum, over the next few years.

Western India has been the biggest market for two wheelers accounting for around 35 per cent of sales followed by the South India market comprising of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.

Satyam Auto Components Limited (SACL) – formerly Sunbeam Steels Limited - is a Hero Group company. SACL is a supplier to Hero Honda Motors Limited, the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world.

Satyam Auto had increased its component supply portfolio to Hero Honda Motors. There was an immediate need within the company to implement an up-to-date technology support system to manage the ongoing delivery of goods.

Prior to Microsoft Navision, SACL was using Tally for accounting and inventory. It also had standalone legacy systems for sales, purchase, finance, materials and stores. Due to the lack of an integrated system, the company was facing numerous challenges in performing different operational functions. SACL also faced problems in tracking information across its various departments.

SACL operations department was unable to coordinate efficiently between inventory and production. This affected on going production and planning. The finance department lacked up-to-date information. This led to difficulty in collating Management Information Services (MIS) reports.

Munjal eSystems, a Microsoft Certified Business Solutions partner, customized and implemented the solution. It implemented the General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Purchase and Payables, Sales and Receivables and Inventory Management modules.

Microsoft Dynamics–Nav was customized, deployed and made operational within a period of six months. The implementation began in November 2002. The solution went live in March 2003. Finance, sales, purchase, production and inventory functions are connected online into one cohesive solution. The solution has been implemented on a single Pentium III server.

The integrated solution has led to improved organizational operations and processes. It has also simplified Management Information Systems reporting.

Streamlined Production

Microsoft Dynamics- Nav allows SACL to effectively manage manufacturing including production orders, supply planning, shop floor production, bills of materials, delivery of goods, customer response, etc. on an ongoing basis.

Optimal Inventory Levels

The solution has enabled accurate inventory supervision within the company. This has facilitated other departments to take prompt procurement and production-related decisions. The Microsoft Navision implementation has also created a lean supply chain with optimized inventory levels that ensure timely availability of goods for production.

Detailed and Accurate Analysis of Business Information

It has provided SACL finance department with detailed financial transactions and analysis. The employees have access to ongoing sales and marketing related information. This has empowered SACL employees to make informed decisions.

Inter–Departmental Coordination

Future Plans

SACL plans to link the complete supply chain and payroll using Microsoft Dynamics- Nav.

In addition, it also plans to have raw material and inventory management totally linked with production.
