Shemaroo has been at the forefront of the infinitely exciting Indian
entertainment industry for the last four decades. Founded in 1962 in Mumbai, it
started as a book circulating library in Mumbai, then set India’s first video
library in eighties and finally diversified and emerged as the top source of
broadcast content for leading entertainment channels. Shemaroo Entertainment has
evolved from home entertainment pioneers to film production, new age media, post
production, distribution, and animation. It uses state-of-the-art studio
facilities, modern digital post production studio equipped with highly
sophisticated studio hardware and software.
The company expects to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 30 percent to
35 percent over the next three years. It clocked sales of U.S.$32.7 million (INR
140 crore) and expects to grow to U.S.$42.1 million (INR 180 crore) next year.
Shemaroo was using homegrown application called Spine for inventory and sales
management, along with locally available financial package Tally for its
accounting and financial management. Microsoft Office Excel sheets for
reporting.
The applications did not integrate and share information. In addition, multiple
bespoke applications meant greater need for data security and also higher CPU
consumption which resulted in slower processing. The invoices were raised
through Spine, and then data was manually entered into Tally and eventually
reports were generated in Microsoft Office Excel worksheets. This made the
process cumbersome, duplication of effort and still lacked the information
required for decision making. There was also no mechanism to deliver
division-wise financial reporting. “Increasing competitive pressures, shifting
markets and volatile material costs forced us to tighten controls in all areas
of the operation. Thus a need for an integrated ERP system that could manage
production, accounts, financials, quality, sales and marketing,” says

Shemaroo explored all available solutions and decided to implement Microsoft®
Dynamics™ AX 4.0 SP1. It approached Godrej Infotech, a Microsoft Gold Certified
Partner, to implement the solution. The implementation started in January, 2007.
Dynamics AX was deployed at Shemaroo Entertainment’s headquarters in Mumbai. The
modules included General Ledger, General Ledger, Accounts Receivables, Accounts
Payables, Inventory Management, Projects and CRM.
The solution was customized up to 10 percent to meet Shemaroo’s requirements.
Godrej Infotech customized content management module to include development,
intellectual property rights (IPR) acquisition and sale management. This enables
the organization to monitor and account for IPR acquisitions such as:
• Capture film details such as cast, crew, censor, songs etc.
• Content rights (Satellite, television etc.) acquired from producers/ banners
− Rights period (Start and expiry date)
− Territory such as India, United Kingdom, United States etc.
• Tracking sales by period and/or territories.
• Financial tracking and reports by banner and movie

Secure, Centralized Access to Information
“Dynamics™ AX 4.0 SP1 allows security policies and group policies to be deployed
centrally. This ensures a common approach across the business, while reducing IT

Dynamics AX provide an efficient way to control who has access to what features
and data. The administrator creates user groups that have permission to access
specific functionality and data based on your company's business processes and
needs.
Single, Integrated and Flexible System
Microsoft Dynamics helps streamline processes and communication because it
centralizes all operations, data and people into a single comprehensive
solution. This in turn brings agility and visibility to Shemaroo, giving it the
ability to monitor operations and take appropriate actions immediately.
A centralized purchasing department takes a more active role in anticipating
material requirements and supplier relationships through more accurate vendor,
job and market information. “In today’s competitive market, Dynamics AX provides
the ability to change reports and system functionality quickly to meet user

Effective Stock and Inventory Management
Dynamics AX is accessible to all the users, gives same view of the data to
various functional users in a single window. “With correct material
classification and logical location implementation, stock movements are
streamlined and tracked”, says Harakhchand Gada, Head of Accounts, Shemaroo
Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. In addition, effective control over inventory is
achieved from the receipt of the raw material to its consumption.
Complete Content Database
Maintaining the database of acquisitions, IPR etc. is critical for Shemaroo’s
business. The centralized database is used to take decisions about new
acquisitions, pervious history, any legal issues, competition and market.
Microsoft Dynamics AX integrates purchase, sales, inventory and accounts, and
generates reports required by the management.
Effective Fixed Assets Management
Fixed assets module records all transactions and tracks fixed assets as per
companies act and income tax act. Fixed assets register and various other
reports are available in the system. The fixed assets module also covers
insurance and maintenance related to fixed assets.
Efficient Financial Management
Dynamics AX manages all the financial parameters of Shemaroo. Banking, cash,
loans, investment, budgeting, deferred tax liabilities, accounting of foreign
exchange fluctuation, tracking of merchandising, event management accounts,
accounts of promotional marketing activities for business development etc.
Everything is taken care of by using a single integrated system which provides
real time reconciliation. Cash forecasting is possible which helps in funds
management. Cash flow and budgets are maintained against each ledger account.
“Dynamics AX project module helps in project budgeting and accounting. It is
possible to track activities, schedule machines and project wise accounting.
Financial dimensions can be used to book and report division wise and asset wise
