HR Service Provider Performs Architecture Assessment to Ease Upgrade
||Thanks to Technical Advisory Services for Microsoft Dynamics AX, we were able to establish and confirm our technical architecture in only a couple of weeks.

Acerta has close to 40 customers who use the company’s hosted e-Salsa solution, which is based on the Human Resource Management module in Microsoft Dynamics AX, to administer their payroll and manage employee data. The payroll functionality is a customized solution. Acerta investigated upgrading when a newer version of Microsoft Dynamics AX became available. Acerta engaged the Microsoft Dynamics Technical Advisory Services (TAS) team, receiving an Architecture Assessment for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 SP1 and assistance with optimal infrastructure design. Because of the TAS study, Acerta established a solution architecture and addressed its concerns regarding how to gain the best long-term value from Microsoft Dynamics AX. Acerta considers the collaboration a great achievement and a breakthrough in defining an infrastructure architecture.
Acerta is a leading human resources (HR) provider in Belgium, with a workforce of 1,200 employees. The company specializes in offering advice on all HR-related topics and in the digitizing and organization of all administrative processes relating to payroll management, social security, child benefits, and branch procedures.
The company combined its payroll software with Microsoft Dynamics AX to develop a new solution, e-Salsa, providing a way to extend the Acerta HR offering in a flexible and dynamic way. Acerta only deployed the Human Resource Management module of Microsoft Dynamics AX, with e-Salsa as a complete customized solution. e-Salsa includes modules for the online management of employee data, career profiling, employee benefits and rewards, role outlines, competencies, selection procedures, and training.
When the company’s version of Microsoft Dynamics AX became outdated and was no longer supported, causing the risk of higher integration and maintenance costs with more limited scalability, Acerta investigated upgrading to the latest version of Microsoft Dynamics AX. Acerta engaged the Microsoft Dynamics Technical Advisory Services (TAS) team to conduct an Architecture Assessment for migrating to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 SP1. The team evaluated the organization’s software architecture and server hardware, conducted a thorough analysis of Acerta’s requirements, and created a comprehensive design document for Microsoft Dynamics AX based on projected users and transactional volume.
The TAS project included several components:
- Architecture overview to enable sizing calculations.
- Server requirements review for the Microsoft Dynamics AX infrastructure.
- Infrastructure design review, combining all components in a diagram.
- Disaster recovery review to determine how each component would support high data availability and what actions to take in disaster recovery.
The team addressed Acerta’s other concerns and provided advice on considerations and options in such areas as virtualization software, integration with an L4 mainframe system, the framework design of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009, Windows Server 2008, and Terminal Server. The team’s recommendations and conclusions summarized recommendations in these areas. The technologists suggested implementing e-Salsa on a single implementation of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009.
In consequence, Acerta successfully deployed Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 as an integrated solution to help the company pursue its strategic objectives.
