As one of the foremost software product engineering houses in India, Aditi Technologies is an early adopter when it comes to embracing emerging technologies. The company needed a superior technology infrastructure that would reduce costs and increase functionality. Aditi chose to build its solution using Microsoft virtualization and cloud technologies and gracefully transitioned to a Hyper-V private cloud solution. The move ensures a 40 percent reduction in costs while consolidating physical servers by 60 percent. Additionally, the implementation of Microsoft Lync Server 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, Exchange Server 2010, and SQL Server 2008 R2 meant better collaboration and communication between Aditi employees.

Situation

Founded in 1994, Aditi Technologies is a solutions and product R&D partner for software businesses and financial services enterprises. The company provides technology consulting and outsourced product development, with core strengths in product conceptualization, design, development, and leverage of emerging technologies in the Microsoft and Web 2.0 space. Aditi enables customers to scale product development capacity, improve R&D economics, and accelerate new technology adoption in ways that enrich product functionality, user experience (UX), and user benefits.

Aditi is one of the top Microsoft National System Integrator Partner’s focused on enterprise social, big data, mobile and digital marketing. With recent acquisition of Cumulux, Aditi is positioned to be a leader in cloud services and will drive the transformation of applications and workloads to the cloud. Aditi is headquartered in Bangalore, India, and has other offices in Coimbatore, Chennai. The company is also established in Seattle, Boston, London, Mountain View, and New York City, besides presence in Far East Asia through its office in Indonesia.

With a significant worldwide presence, Aditi’s internal communication infrastructure was spread across multiple global servers. By now, the company’s infrastructure consisted largely of about 50 servers. Overall, the result was a decentralized, heterogeneous environment that was difficult and expensive to manage. The growing corporate infrastructure was also putting pressure on email and other communication and collaboration servers.

The messaging environment based on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, was swiftly receding. In addition, the intranet based on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007, was overdue for a makeover.

Existing underlying servers had grown old and required replacement. However, as the size of the infrastructure had grown, the costs of hardware replacement had also soared. “Replacing servers and procuring server supporting operating systems and applications licenses posed the likelihood of a huge investment,” says RK Dhanalakshmi, Head - Information Systems, Aditi Technologies. “Moreover, with the existing infrastructure Aditi often had to expend significant efforts on supporting server operating systems making it challenging to provide great server uptime to users.”

As an emerging technology early adopter, Aditi wanted a solution that could leverage new technologies. The company’s idea was to invest in technologies that would offer agility and support growth while maintaining a manageable infrastructure. “Because we were pulling together disparate systems, we needed to implement a centralized system that could be accessed by our entire staff,” says Guruprasad Joshi, Sr. Manager - Information Systems, Aditi Technologies.

Solution

To solve its issues, Aditi decided to adopt virtualization technology as it seemed much more prudent and could deliver much greater returns over the long term. The company’s requirements pointed to a private cloud solution using virtual servers and management. Virtualization promised better utilization of hardware, leading to fewer physical servers, greater agility, reduced deployment and maintenance costs, and greater scalability.

After evaluating multiple options, Aditi concluded upon adopting Microsoft’s virtualization technology – Hyper-V. “Not only was Hyper-V more powerful than other available solutions, it met all our technical requirements and also added a clear cost benefit,” says Vijaya K Anand, Manager - Information Systems, Aditi Technologies. “On the basis of cost, storage availability, and reliability, we knew that Microsoft was providing the best solution to us.”

Windows Server 2008 R2 was rolled out across the organization so it could support the Hyper-V platform. Hyper-V served as a server virtualization technology to optimize server hardware investments by consolidating multiple server roles as separate virtual machines running on a single physical machine. Today, the company has six physical servers, running 60 servers and scalable to host 20 additional servers. These are hosted using Hyper-V cluster, SQL cluster, Exchange Database Availability Group (DAG), and Windows Network Load Balancing (NLB).

Aditi also deployed its messaging, communications, database, and collaboration environment on the virtualized platform. The design and implementation of the core infrastructure was built around Microsoft’s Virtualization technology. Valuable opinions from top Microsoft experts were considered before deciding upon adopting Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, Microsoft Lync Server 2010, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 to support the organization.

Exchange Server 2010 along with Lync Server 2010, and SQL Server 2008 R2, offered the performance and reliability needed to make communications widely available. These also addressed the demands for simplified administration, security, and greater mobility.

Aditi strengthened its collaboration infrastructure with the deployment of SharePoint Server 2010. The 3-tier architecture comprises SharePoint 2010 farm with a high available application server, backed by SQL 2008 R2 cluster for high availability. This involved migration of 20+ primary sites to a new framework and governance.

The company deployed the complete solution on a NetApp storage area network, NetApp SAN, to achieve a unified communications, messaging, and collaboration environment. NetApp SAN provided efficient storage without sacrificing performance or availability. Multiple POCs to understand Hyper-V, Exchange Server 2010, network load balancing, and Database Availability Group on Exchange Server 2010 were carried out. Following which, a staging environment to host the infrastructure was setup before taking the solution live. The entire effort was done in house.

“In all, the solution made sense and provided for simpler management and better availability,” says RK Dhanalakshmi. “We are using it to reduce IT costs while increasing IT capacity.”

Benefits

By choosing a Microsoft virtualization environment Aditi is able to provide a compelling cloud offering and gain significant operational efficiencies. The company benefits from a more dynamic IT environment that allows for better collaboration, quicker sharing and easier communication between the company’s employees. In addition, there is the added benefit of federating with clients for efficient communication.

Reduced Costs by 40 Percent

The company has significantly reduced its number of physical servers with a virtualized environment. “Our savings come primarily from reduced hardware costs,” says R S Rethinasamy, CFO, Aditi Technologies.

Rethinasamy continues, “These savings are driven from reduced operating expenses needed to support the servers as well as the capital expense needed to replace them. Overall, we observed a cost saving of 40 percent.”

Improved Communication and Collaboration

Aditi is taking advantage of SharePoint Server 2010 to improve communication within and among its departments and employees. “Team members feel more integrated,” says Srinidhi Setty, Sr. Manager - Information Systems, Aditi Technologies. “They can collaborate on projects, share documents, and discuss ideas. We are improving our communication processes by providing a collaboration workspace where teams can consolidate all of their information.”

Lowered Communication Costs

By deploying Microsoft Lync Server 2010, Aditi expects to significantly lower its communication costs. “With Lync, employees will have more communication options,” says Guruprasad Joshi. “Mainly, the voice capabilities in Lync Server will reduce our need for traditional desk phones, which will lower our communication costs by 50 - 80 percent.”

Simplified Management

The new Hyper-V environment centralizes management of virtual machines - accelerating, provisioning and improving server utilization. By maximizing the performance of its virtualized environment, the company is not only boosting the level of automation, but it is also able to simplify the deployment of new applications without having to deploy new hardware servers. The environment is also designed to ensure stronger application availability.

Enabled Customer Showcase

“The entire project related to virtualization, ensuring high availability with Hyper-V and SQL Server, migration to SharePoint 2010, and Lync 2010 was carried out in-house,” says RK Dhanalakshmi.

She continues, “This helps us showcase our expertise and confidence in enabling the same for our customers.”
