IT Firm Makes Connections, Solves Problems and Supports Customers Better
Axtec Technologia is a three year old IT consulting business in the San Paulo, Brazil area. It has 12 employees, 14 PCs and approximately 100 customers. In addition to consulting, the firm also manufactures desktop and servers using Intel system boards and processors along with a variety of Seagate and Kingston components. Two of the major challenges it faces are managing new customers and how to operate more efficiently in terms of sharing information internally. "We always welcome new technology that helps us be more productive, but we are constantly challenged by how to best find, market and service new customers,” said Heber de Faria, project services, Axtec Tecnologia.
Axtec Technologia is finding several features in the Windows 7 operating system that are helping it make faster printer and network connections, capture customers’ computer problems more easily and support customers more efficiently.

Problem Steps Recorder allows Axtec staff and customers to precisely capture and communicate a computer problem. It also enables Axtec to document fixes, create tutorials or knowledge-based reference materials. Taskbar Customization Jump Lists allow Axtec users to see the most recently used files by right-clicking on the taskbar.
Network Connection Wizard
This feature provides easier desktop connection to wireless, VPN and LAN networks. For Axtec, it means engineers can more quickly identify all network connection options within a single window. Location Aware Printing It automatically recognizes each new default printer as Axtec technicians move from one network to another.
In most instances, Windows 7 starts up, shuts down, resumes from standby and responds faster than previous operating systems.
Action Center keeps an Axtec user informed about PC status without interrupting the workflow. It also provides direct links to a large variety of security and maintenance solutions.
Deployment Image Servicing and Management Explore
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), a new command-line tool for Windows 7 Professional and Windows Server™ 2008 R2 DISM, consolidates the core image management functions of multiple tools found in the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK). Additionally, DISM enables IT professionals to view components of an applied or mounted operating system image and add or remove packages, software updates, and drivers.
Features Speed Workflow
Axtec users notice an improvement in the overall performance of the Windows 7 computers even though Windows Vista® was installed on more powerful machines. "Windows 7 PCs were much faster booting up or resuming from hibernate," said de Faria. "We can get working faster and that helps us be more productive and take care of our customers faster." The Axtec commercial team regularly needs to browse several B2B or distributor websites at the same time to create customer proposals. At the same time they can be using Windows Live Messenger to chat directly with customers on pricing and problem issues. As a result, several windows are open on the desktop and Windows 7 Professional features are now providing better ways to navigate and manage the information. "The taskbar helps us to be more productive by providing immediate access to applications and recent documents," said de Faria. "The Pinning and Jump List features in Windows 7 make this possible."
Faster Network and Printer Connections
According to de Faria, Network Connection Wizard makes connections faster regardless of the type: VPN, wireless or cell networks. "Our consulting business requires that we constantly move and connect to a variety of networks at home, cafés, the office and customer sites. Now, making a connection is easier. We no longer waste time with this common task." Printing to the wrong printer can waste time and materials along with being somewhat embarrassing. The Axtec team often works from both the home and office, however, if they fail to change the default printer, documents are produced at the wrong location. "Location Aware Printing is another Windows 7 feature that helps make a faster connection," continued de Faria. "Printing to the wrong printer is no longer an issue. Windows 7 knows the default printer for each unique network. That's amazingly helpful."
Critical Security and Maintenance Actions Easier
Compared to older operating systems that require searching for security and maintenance settings and updates, Windows 7 serves up this information in one place with Action Center. Action Center also provides simple "alerts" that help Axtec users respond to critical activities faster. "Action Center makes it easier for us and our customers to quickly identify security and maintenance issues, like the status of antivirus definition database, the status of Windows updates and the status of Windows Firewall," noted de Faria. "Rather than having to search for antivirus software notices or pending updates in several different places with older operating systems, we have a single view that gives us the information we need."
Troubling Shooting Less Trouble
“Though some events cannot be detected by wizards, the Windows 7 Troubleshooting feature helps our customers find and solve minor problems themselves, avoiding the expense of calling Axtec,” explains de Faria. There are additional Windows 7 tools that help solve IT problems more efficiently. "Many of our customers don't have much technical experience so accurately capturing and reporting a computer problem, like a broken link or shortcut to an application, is an issue. Problem Steps Recorder helps us to separate human errors from machine errors for faster resolution."

The new imaging and deployment tools in Windows 7 are making a significant difference in set up times for Axtec engineers. "The Deployment Image Servicing and Management feature in Windows 7 speeds up installs on the OEM equipment we build," said de Faria.
