Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Do you have an upgrade copy or a full product copy of
Windows Vista?
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
This is described on the front of the Windows Vista
retail box or on an online sales receipt.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
With an upgrade copy, you can install Windows Vista
if you already own a compliant, licensed version of Windows 2000, Windows XP, or
Windows Vista.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
With a full copy, you can upgrade, where possible, or
perform a clean installation of Windows Vista, even if no operating system is installed
on your computer.

purchased
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):

CAN U UNINSTALL WINDOWS VISTA ?
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
You cannot uninstall Windows Vista, but you can reinstall
your previous operating system, which then replaces Windows Vista. To reinstall
your old operating system, you must have the original installation disc. Back up
your programs and files, insert the installation disc into your computer, and then
reinstall the old operating system. To regain the hard disk space used by Windows
Vista, reformat the disk during the reinstallation process. After reinstalling your
previous operating system, reinstall your programs and files.

Q:
Sorry ... SP1 is known to have deactivated some ORIGINAL Vista installations. And
folks have been unable to activate it again ... not easily atleast. Any comments

Windows Backup and Restore Center
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
The file backup and restore features in Windows Vista
make it easier for you to keep your data safe from user error, hardware failure,
and other problems.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
The Windows Backup and Restore Center gives you one
place to manage all backup and restore features.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Depending on the version of Windows Vista you have,
there are two approaches you can take to backing up files: Automatic Backup, which
backs up just your files and data; or Complete PC Backup, which backs up everything
on your PC, including the operating system and applications.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Automatic Backup
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Automatic File Backup helps to keep your files safe
and is available in almost all editions of Windows Vista (it is not included in
Starter and has only basic functionality in Home Basic edition). Windows Complete
PC Backup is available in the Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions, and performs
a complete, image-based backup of the entire computer.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Scheduled and Network Backup
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Two particularly useful Automatic Backup features are
the ability to do a scheduled backup and the ability to back up your files to a
network location. (These features are available in all editions of Windows Vista
except for Home Basic.)
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
To help make protecting your files as convenient as
possible, with Automatic Backup, you can back up your files to an external hard
drive, secondary hard drive, writable CD or DVD, or to a network location. Best
of all, Windows Vista will automatically make backups of your data on the schedule
that you set, so you never have to worry about forgetting to back up your work.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
yesh ace this is text based chat !
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Previously backed-up versions of files use only a bare
minimum of disk space. If only a small part of a file changes (such as one slide
in a presentation), only that portion gets tracked and saved.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Of course, backup is only as useful as the process you
use to recover your work, and Windows Vista makes this a cinch. A recovery wizard
helps you select the files or folders you want to restore and prompts you for the
backup storage medium you used. Then it restores your files
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
By the way, if you've accidentally written over a file,
say saving an older version of a report you're writing over the top of a newer version,
then the Shadow Copy feature can help you recover a prior version of that file.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
SHADOW COPY
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Have you ever accidentally saved over a file you were
working on? Accidental file deletion or modification is a common cause of data loss.
Windows Vista includes a useful innovation to help you protect your data: Shadow
Copy. Available in the Ultimate, Business, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista,
this feature automatically creates point-in-time copies of files as you work, so
you can quickly and easily retrieve versions of a document you may have accidentally
deleted. Shadow copy is automatically turned on in Windows Vista and creates copies
on a scheduled basis of files that have changed. Since only incremental changes
are saved, minimal disk space is used for shadow copies.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Easily access this feature by right-clicking a file
or folder and selecting "Restore previous versions." It enables you to go back in
time and access your files and folders as they were on previous dates. You can preview
each file in a read-only version to determine which file to restore. Then, to fully
restore it, you can just drag the file to a folder, or select it and click "Restore"
to restore it to its original location.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
It works on single files as well as whole folders. When
restoring a file, all previous versions that are different from the live copy on
the disk are shown. When accessing a previous version of a folder, users can browse
the folder hierarchy as it was in a previous point in time.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Available in Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise
editions, Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore is a comprehensive, image-based
backup tool that will help you out of a tight spot if you need to recover your entire
system.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
While file restore is useful in cases of file loss and
data corruption, Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore is most useful for disaster
recovery when your PC malfunctions. This feature helps you create complete PC backups,
and then in the event of a serious system issue or data loss, Windows Complete PC
Backup and Restore can restore your entire PC environment, including the operating
system, installed programs, user settings, and data files.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
You can restore your PC back to its original state or
onto another PC. Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore can be initiated from within
Windows Vista or from the Windows Vista installation CD, if the PC is not able to
start up normally from the hard disk.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
System Restore
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
System Restore enables you to restore your computer
to an earlier state without losing data. This is ideal if your computer is not operating
well because of a configuration change, a problem with an application, or the introduction
of viruses or other unwanted software. By restoring to an earlier point—a point
before your computer began displaying problems—you may be able to easily resolve
the problems. (Applications that have been installed since the restore point will
be removed.) You don't have to worry about taking periodic system snapshots—System
Restore automatically creates easily identifiable restore points. You can also manually
create restore points at any time.

What’s included in Windows Vista SP1
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Windows Vista SP1 includes improvements that address
many of the most common reasons for which Windows stops responding. Many of the
reliability improvements in SP1 are in response to issues that customers reported
by using the Windows Error Reporting tool
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Other reliability improvements in Windows Vista SP1
include improvements in wireless computer-to-computer (ad hoc) connections, better
peer-to-peer connections, such as using Windows Meeting Space, and many more.

Improvements in performance
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Windows Vista SP1 includes many changes that can improve
your computer's speed and performance. Here are some of the areas that are improved:
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Faster copying or extracting files from a compressed
mode.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Better use of network bandwidth when browsing file shares
over a network.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Improved performance from Windows ReadyBoost in reducing
the time it takes for Windows to wake up from Hibernate and Standby power modes.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Better power consumption when your computer screen is
idle for a long time.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Improved logon experience when using a corporate computer,
such as a laptop, outside of the corporate network.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Faster opening of large image files

Improvements in security
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
You can now use BitLocker to encrypt multiple partitions
on your computer's hard disk, rather than just a single partition. Note that BitLocker
is only available in Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate.
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
Changes to search
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
SP1 includes an important change to the way desktop
search works in Windows Vista. You can now select a default desktop search service,
similar to the way you can select a default search service for web browsers and
media players. With SP1, you can now get to your preferred search results from within
the Start menu and Windows Explorer.

Changes in memory (RAM) reporting
Shantanu Kaushik
(Expert):
SP1 also changes how the random access memory (RAM) that is installed in your computer is
reported. Before SP1, the amount of memory reported was equal to the amount of memory
that Windows was able to use. In SP1, the amount of memory reported is the amount
of memory that is actually installed on your computer. If you have 4 gigabytes (GB)
of memory installed, you’ll now see 4 GB of memory reported by features such as
System or Performance Information and Tools in Control Panel. This change can only
happen if your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) is capable of displaying
that much RAM.
