Hi Rajesh
subhashini (Moderator):
Q: So what's a good tip for extra performance while running XP?
subhashini (Moderator):
I request all of you to refrain from using "Submit your question " tab
subhashini (Moderator):
We are having issues with that and suggest all of you to post your queries at the line chat
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Hello Everyone, Good evening and thanks for taking your time to attend this chat. Today I will be talking about windows XP and how you can get the most out of it.
sanjay:
Hi everyone
IAn:
hiya
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Also, I will talk how you can tweak it to meet your style and also take advantage of the new features that have been build in specifically for Windows XP
sumanth:
Hi Everyone!
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
As all of you know that XP has been designed for the home user (entertainment, security and flexibility to customize for each and every one) and the professional user (flexibility, high level of security and enhancements to help in his day to day work).
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
I will share some of the best experiences to have a better way of working with Windows XP. Note that this chat is based on true experiences and we will not cover security related features because I have covered this earlier on XP SP2 on November 10th.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
1. File System
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Always use NTFS file system to take advantage of the security of Windows XP. If you stick to FAT file system the results might not be as expected and you will get different results. It is NTFS which makes the difference in security and protection.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
2. Disk Storage
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Always partition the hard disk in the ratio 50:50 and then install all the program files in the partition on which XP is installed. Leave the other partition for the data files since they can be moved at will.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Never partition the hard disk in the ratio X:Y where X is smaller than Y for the sake of preserving hard disk space. Do not partition the hard disk into too many partitions. You will experience difficulties when these partitions run out of space.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
3. Welcome Screen and Fast Switching
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
If you are using Windows XP in a home environment, always use "The Welcome screen". This gives a cleaner interface to work with and also helps home people who are not familiar with the “Ctrl-Alt-Del” window to login to Windows.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
It also enables to use Fast Switching. Note that the Fast Switching can be done only on computers which are not in a domain.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
4. Virtual memory
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
This is one of the most important factor which makes the big difference in Windows XP. If you have a fast processor and sufficient RAM say 512 MB then you can stick to the default settings i.e. Adjust for best appearance in the “Visual Effects tab”
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
and the default Virtual Page Size in “Virtual Memory”. Or you can use this recommended settings which is always the best choice.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
• Adjust for Best Performance. – You will lose the animation effects in Windows, but it helps to compensate for the slow processing power.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
• Use System Managed Size for all the drives. – you will get more benefit from this setting. Never set the minimum and maximum values by yourself. If you try to set values which are wrong, you could face unpredictable results and sluggish performance.
sagar:
How to increase the performance for an machine installed with XP Pro and used for hardcore development purpose requiring 1 GB RAM? Basic settings
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
If you find that you are running out of space on the partition on which Windows XP is installed due to the installation of lot of programs then this is recommended.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
• No Paging File for the drive on which XP is installed.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
• Use System Managed Size for the remaining partition/partitions.
sagar asked the experts: How to increase the performance for an machine installed with XP Pro and used for hardcore development purpose requiring 1 GB RAM? Basic settings
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
5. Creation of Accounts
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
When you install Windows XP for the first time, you will be prompted for a password to login to Windows. This is known as the Administrator’s account and is the first account that is created. This cannot be deleted.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Now when you are creating accounts for the other members who are going to use the computer always work WITHOUT administrative privileges. This will help secure your computer from outside attacks especially when on the Internet.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Switch to the administrator’s account only when needed to install programs or make changes to the computer.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
6. Installation of Applications
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
When installing applications, keep in mind that most of the applications weren’t designed for Windows XP. Hence most users with limited account privileges will not be able to see the applications that is installed that were installed by other users.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
If you see the installation program with this option “Just for me” and “For everyone on this computer”, it means that you will be able to share the applications on a user wise basis.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
7. Windows Auto Update
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Always enable Windows Update since and schedule it at a fixed time when your computer will not be much operative and this will work silently in the background to keep your computer up to date with important security updates from Microsoft.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Never turn off Windows Update. You will realise how much Windows Update meant to protect your computer before some disaster strikes globally.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
8. Driver management – rollback drivers
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
When installing drivers for hardware components and software always ensure that the driver has been designed and written for Windows XP. This can be verified by visiting the manufacturer’s website and checking if there are updated drivers for Windows XP.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Or the drivers for different Operating systems will reside in separate folders on the driver CD that is provided with the hardware and Windows XP should be one of them. If this folder XP does not reside on the installation CD it means the hardware might
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
not function properly on Windows XP as expected. If you find that some hardware devices do not have updated drivers, consider upgrading the hardware to one which has drivers supported for XP.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
9. Start up items when Windows XP boots
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Always ensure that the items in the Start-up folder are as minimal as possible. This will ensure that Windows XP boots up faster and doesn’t spend more time in processing the items which are configured to start up when Windows boots up.
venkat_kl:
hi every body
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
10. Task pane in Explorer
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
If you are using Classic View like in Windows 2000 Professional then switch to Task Pane in Explorer. This can be configured this way. Open Explorer, Click on Tools | Options. In the General tab ensure that “Show Common Tasks in Folders" is checked.
venkat_kl asked the experts:
hi subhasini
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
This way you will get a relative set of commands when working with specific types of files and folders and this will help to reduce the number of right clicks on files and folders.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
11. Wizards to help in the completion of each and every task
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Windows XP comes with plenty of wizards to help you in each and every task. For example they appear when installing of new hardware or software or when configuring any feature of Windows XP.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Use them to their full potential and this saves a lot of time when configuring the hardware or software or any other feature in Windows XP.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Even a trouble shooter is provided for each wizard to help you if something goes wrong.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
12. Online Crash Analysis
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Windows XP comes with Error Reporting enabled so that you can send error reports to Microsoft for reporting frequent crashes of applications or faulty devices whenever they crash on your desktop.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
You may be required to download updated drivers to resolve the issues related to that driver. Please DO NOT ignore sending error reports to Microsoft. They can be very useful to you one day when a specific problem is fixed.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
13. Help and support screen
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Did you know that Help and Support gives you a lot of tools that can help you gather a lot of information about your system. There are a host of tools useful for diagnosis, troubleshooting, back up etc.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Also there are useful reports which help you gather information from your system like detailed system information, software and hardware details, running services. It also provides a one stop store for all tools that you will need for your system.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Also this is the launch pad for Windows Update if you have not turned it on to function automatically.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
14. Remote assistance
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
This is a tool that will help you to contact an expert either through MSN Messenger or through email so that he/she can connect to your computer and help you to solve your problems which you couldn’t solve or unable to solve.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
An invitation will be sent to the person so that he will be able to connect to your computer. Note that you will be in full control of your computer during the time the remote assistance is on.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
15. Remote Desktop
bEEgle: What improvements can we do as a developer to enhance the windows console?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
This is one of the most important tool which helps you to connect to your primary computer from another computer whether on a local area network or in another remote place. It works on the lines of Terminal Server.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Remote Desktop allows you to connect to your desktop from another place so that you can work on it as if you were working on your primary computer. Note that data is still secure on the remote desktop because it is only the keystrokes which are transmitted
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
across the network and not the data itself.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
16. System Restore
IUnknown asked the experts:
Rajesh - can you tell me where I can pickup the log files of Dr. Watson ?
bEEgle asked the experts:
What improvements can we do as a developer to enhance the windows console?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Imagine having trouble removing a corrupted application or your system is unstable because a faulty application changed the settings of your computer rendering it unusable. What if you could put your computer back to the state,
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
when it was before you installed the corrupted application. Well System Restore allows you to do that. With a single click it allows you to set the system back as if you were turning back the clock to a particular date.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
This is one of the most valuable tool of Windows XP. Never disable this feature and it will definitely help you in one of those moments where you are unable to use your Windows XP.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
17. Compatibility wizard
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Do you have a software that doesn’t work properly in Windows XP but supports an older version of Windows say 2000, or ME or 98.
IUnknown asked the experts: But System Restore takes a lot of diskspace. Is there a way using which that can be reduced (like saving only last 3 restore points) ?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Well don’t worry because Windows XP comes with the Compatibility Wizard which fools the application to think that it is working on the operating system on which it is supported and you will be able to run your applications on Windows XP.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
18. USB Support
IUnknown:
Rajesh - u r just enumerating the know features - things which we already know about. It will be better if you could give some more specific insights.
Thiru asked the experts:
what are the minimum required services for Windows XP with sp2 to work properly. Is there any tweaking utility released by Microsoft rather than doing it using system configuration utility.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]: Windows XP comes with greater support for USB devices and a wizard pops up every time you plug a USB device into your computer running Windows XP and it will offer to assist you with the set up and configuration.
IUnknown: Do you mind answering the queries I have put forward?
venkat_kl asked the experts:
To Clean up the Registry is there any good tool recommended by Microsoft
IAn:
I am thinking the same as IUnkown a lot of people know these common features
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
19.Tweak UI
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
This is a free utility provided by Microsoft and helps to tweak most of the settings in Windows to your liking. You will find that most of these settings and tweaks are time savers and can make a big difference in your work.
IUnknown: Rajesh - we know about these. Could you answer about something more specific, like our queries?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Well that was the list of common and recommended features that help you to get the most out of Windows XP.
DotNETKans:
I believe, all these known features could be put in some html file and a link can be provided here.
IAn:
true
bEEgle:
but the discussion is for making Win XP more powerful I think
IUnknown asked the experts:
how can I use the EFS with the certificate server from Microsoft ?
venkat_kl asked the experts:
How can I burn the CD with Windows XP?
IAn asked the experts:
Is there a preferred or best setting for Virtual memory?
bEEgle:
XP has its own CD burning software
IAn:
Just drag and drop using MS software
IUnknown: Q: How can the EFS be used with the certificate server?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: bEEgle asked the experts: What improvements can we do as a developer to enhance the windows console?
IUnknown:
Q: Where can we pickup the Dr. Watson log files from?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: can you be more clear on what do you mean by enhancing the windows console
Thiru:
what happ to my q?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: IUnknown asked the experts: But System Restore takes a lot of disk space. Is there a way using which that can be reduced (like saving only last 3 restore points) ?
venkat_kl:
What is MS Software, Where can i get that
bEEgle:
i mean console like in linux systems
IAn: venkat - Microsoft, its built into Windows XP. Just drag and drop what you want to burn onto the CD
IUnknown:
Well?
subhashini (Moderator):
Q:What improvements can we do as a developer to enhance the windows console?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A:
To reduce the space, Configure System Restore to decrease the amount of Space for System Restore, This helps to reduce the number of restore points. You can find that in the window where you launched System Restore.
bEEgle:
not a specific MS software. Just right click on a file and send it to CD drive or drag n drop as IAn suggested.
IUnknown:
Q: But how will I know how many restore points its saving in that reduced space?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: IAn asked the experts: Is there a preferred or best setting for Virtual memory?
Magic Ravi:
Dr. Watson log can be found under windows directory as drwatson.log
subhashini (Moderator):
Request all of you to use "guest chat" radial button by default to ask your questions. Please do not use "submit a question" button for this chat.
subhashini (Moderator):
Q:How to increase the performance for an machine installed with XP Pro and used for hardcore development purpose requiring 1 GB RAM? Basic settings
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: No as per experience, the best way is to do the configuration as I explained in the points above. This is one of recommended practice but will vary from machine to machine. And practice makes best experience
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q:How to increase the performance for an machine installed with XP Pro and used for hardcore development purpose requiring 1 GB RAM? Basic settings
Thiru asked the experts:
still I am not getting any ans.
subhashini (Moderator):
Q:Is there a preferred or best setting for Virtual memory?
bEEgle asked the experts:
can we control our system from outside using telnet server. Like I want to start my IIS/FTP services from windows console?
Magic Ravi:
thiru there is no special tweaking utility to control the services as such released by MS
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: If the application requires 1 GB of memory and your system is below that mark, then there is not much you can do to increase the performance, even if you strip down Windows XP to the basic functioning level. The only way will be to go for higher RAM.
subhashini (Moderator):
Q:how can I use the EFS with the certificate server from Microsoft ?
Magic Ravi:
you need to use msconfig to configure your startup
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: Thiru asked the experts: what are the minimum required services for Windows XP with sp2 to work properly. Is there any tweaking utility released by Microsoft rather than doing it using system configuration utility.
bEEgle:
how can i use remote desktop connection from windows 98 to connect to my other PC having Win XP ?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: The minimum required services have been enabled in Windows and there is no specific way to stop certain services by yourself. Note that it isn't services which affect the performance but the way you use the applications and the way the system is tuned.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Please try to follow the steps as documented above and you might be able to come close to that. Best steps are to enable firewall, use antivirus scanner and not to use Windows XP beyond what it is capable of doing.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: bEEgle: how can i use remote desktop connection from windows 98 to connect to my other PC having Win XP ?
Magic Ravi:
hi IUnknown there is no way to control the number of restore points, but after some restore point if you think they are not required and need to start with a restore point from then, you can disable restore point once which will delete all the RP and you
Magic Ravi:
can begin fresh
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
you will be required to download this tool and install it on operating systems prior to Windows XP so as to connect to XP from 98, 95 , 2000 etc
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Note that this software is also available on the Windows XP CD
bEEgle:
got it ! thanks
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: IUnknown: Rajesh - u r just enumerating the know features - things which we already know about. It will be better if you could give some more specific insights.
Magic Ravi: EFS Answer - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/cryptfs.mspx
bEEgle:
Can we run applications made in Visual Studio .NET without installing .NET Framework in XP or earlier versions ?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: But I find that most people do not follow this steps when having a low powered computer and using hardware and software that is not designed for XP. Hence these points.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: bEEgle: Can we run applications made in Visual Studio .Net without installing dotnet Framework in Xp or earlier versions ?
DotNETKans:
bEEgle - I think no. You need to have .net framework
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: No the application will require the .NET Framework to work. And you can install the .NET Framework run time files which is smaller in size than the .NET Framework SDK
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
And also .NET Framework has been made a part of Windows XP through Windows Update.
Magic Ravi:
the new XP with SP2 will have the .Net runtime bundled
DotNETKans:
from MS Windows 2003 Server onwards, we don't need to install .NET Framework. Correct me if i m wrong.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: DotNETKans: from MS Windows 2003 Server onwards, we don't need to install .NET Framework. Correct me if I m wrong.
Narayanan_D:
Yes. from Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 server onwards, .net frame work need not be installed. it is INBUILT...
bEEgle:
yes true
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: .NET Framework is an integral part of Windows 2003 and has been there since it was released. Note that the version with Windows 2003 Server is 1.1
venkat_kl asked the experts:
To Clean-UP the registry which s/w you recommend?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q:To Clean up the Registry is there any good tool recommended by Microsoft
subhashini (Moderator):
venkat_kl asked the experts:
To Clean-UP the registry which s/w you recommend?
bEEgle:
yes there is one s/w
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: No there is no tool provided by MS, and you will have to rely on third party tools , But I have no expertise on using third party software.
bEEgle:
regclean is one i think
Magic Ravi:
There are several third party utilities available and also a utility from microsoft which is not supported by MS anymore (Regclean)
Narayanan_D:
As said "Regclean" was working excellently in older versions. Sadly, now it is not working in XP.
Paul-Eutech asked the experts:
What are the basic services that are need for a XP? When we install XP there are lots of unwanted services which are running at the background and holds up lot of memory
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: Paul-Eutech asked the experts: What are the basic services that are need for a XP? When we install XP there are lots of unwanted services which are running at the background and holds up lot of memory
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: good question. Well it depends on where you are using XP, whether at home or at work , or as a stand alone computer or as part of the workgroup.
Magic Ravi:
After the installation the services that are running none of them are unwanted, the installation only installs and configures the bare minimum required based on the installation type.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
So it means that the services that can be stopped or disabled will vary as per the scenario and hence the services will be running as per the configuration of XP as mentioned above.
Fursty Ferret:
Is there any significant performance advantage in using an NTFS cluster size larger than 4KB, on a general use PC?
bEEgle:
Are third party software to get rid from spywares/adwares beneficial, and what steps does Microsoft is taking to improve IE ?
DotNETKans:
It was nice talking to you Rajesh. And nice time to you guys also. Bye for now. See you soon.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: bEEgle: Are third party software to get rid from spywares/adwares beneficial, and what steps does Microsoft is taking to improve IE ?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: There are 2 well known spyware softwares and they are Ad-aware and Spy-bot. Both are well known and reliable in remove spyware. But when you run your Windows XP without administrative privileges, you will notice a marked difference in performance
venkat_kl asked the experts:
Where do i get all OS releted Tools at one place?
Magic Ravi:
MS is working on permenant fix for this problem and that is what bundled in XP SP2
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
because it is the privileges which are allowing the spyware to enter the system. Also Internet Explorer has been enhanced in Windows XP through Service Pack 2.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
and that is the highest level of protection that is available now with Service Pack 2.
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: venkat_kl asked the experts: Where do I get all OS related Tools at one place?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: You can start with
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Help and support
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
that is the one stop interface for all the tools to work with Windows XP. Note that I have explained about this "Help and Support" in the points above.
Magic Ravi:
Venkat there is no place that consolidate all the tools at place
venkat_kl asked the experts:
I am asking on the MS Web site?
Paul-Eutech asked the experts:
Security is a one of the issue in XP now a days. Is there any checklist for the same? Also, how to tweak our system for the same?
Narayanan_D asked the experts:
By default, for a new user, the appearance and performance settings will be set to "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer". But i want to it to default to "Adjust for best performance" for every new user, who is logging on. Could you please tell
bEEgle:
Can i access my NTFS drives of Win XP from Win 98 ?
Magic Ravi:
Even in MS site all the tools are placed under different OS category in download place
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: Paul-Eutech asked the experts: Security is a one of the issue in XP now a days. Is there any checklist for the same? Also, how to tweak our system for the same?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: Well you can refer to the site www.microsoft.com/security
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
that is the best plact to start with
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: bEEgle: Can i access my NTFS drives of Win XP from Win 98 ?
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
A: No 98 does not support NTFS and so you cannot see NTFS partitions from 98
M_Rajesh [EXPERT]:
Q: Narayanan_D asked the experts: By default, for a new user, the appearance and performance settings will be set to "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer". But i want to it to default to "Adjust for best performance" for every new user, who is l

The next webchat is scheduled on January 12,2005 Chat Topic :Globalizing and Localizing Applications using .NET
Planning on distributing your application to an international audience, there are a number of things you'll need to keep in mind during the design and development phases. Even if you don't have such plans, a small effort up front can make things considerably easier should your plans change in future versions of your application. Services built into the .NET Framework make it easy to develop a single application that can adapt to different locales using managed development with Visual Basic or Visual C#.
Join the discussion to learn how we can leverage some cool features of .NET framework to alleviate the tasks; globalization, the process of crafting applications that can adapt to different cultures, and localization, the process of translating resources for a specific culture.
