Windows® and SuSE Linux EAL4+ Workload Comparison
Dickerson Technologies (February 2006): This study documents the vendor efforts to build six common server roles following the security configuration guides provided with the SUSE Linux Enteprise Server 9 and Windows Server 2003/Windows XP EAL4+ Common Criteria evaluated operating systems. The study found that all six configurations could be successfully built, deployed and used with the evaluated Windows configuration, but only one of the server roles could be built using the evaluated SUSE configuration.

Database Security Comparison Shows Microsoft Has Fewer Vulnerabilities Than Linux-hosted Alternatives
Security Innovation (June 2005): "Role Comparison Security Report: Database Server Role" by Herbert Thompson and Fabien Casteran. In a comparison of relative security, this commissioned study found Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server 2000 SP3 to have fewer vulnerabilities than Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) running Oracle 10g or RHEL running My SQL.
   
   
Comparing Total Cost of Security Patch Management
Wipro Technologies (April 2005): "The Total Cost of Security Patch Management: A Comparison of Microsoft Windows and Open Source Software" by Theo Forbath, Patrick Kalaher, and Thomas O'Grady. In this study, Wipro surveyed 90 organizations—that use both Windows and open-source software—to determine the costs of security patch management for both environments under similar conditions.
   
   
Data Shows Web Server Workload on Windows Server Platform Has Fewer Security Vulnerabilities
Security Innovation (March 2005): "Role Comparison Report: Web Server Role" by Richard Ford, Ph.D., Florida Institute of Technology; Herbert H. Thompson, Ph.D., Security Innovation; and Fabien Casteran, M.Sc., Security Innovation. This study found that in a role-based comparison of the relative security—both quantitative and qualitative—of two different solutions, the number of vulnerabilities and average days of risk were lower for the solution based on Windows Server 2003.
   
   
Windows Users Have Fewer Vulnerabilities
Forrester (March 2004): "Is Linux More Secure Than Windows?" by Laura Koetzle with Charles Rutstein, Natalie Lambert, and Stephan Wenninger. After collecting a year's worth of vulnerability data for this non-sponsored report, Forrester then analyzed Windows and four key Linux distributors on metrics about responsiveness to vulnerabilities, severity of vulnerabilities, and thoroughness in fixing flaws.
