November, 2006 |
| On 23rd September, the day and
night are equal and it is the autumn equinox. But
this year this date has much more significance.
One, it marked the beginning of religiously important
period and two, the IT giant Microsoft introduced
Xbox 360 to the Indian market. Xbox 360 was launched
globally in the month of November last year. Why
was it launched almost ten months late? |

| Face it – how long has
it been since a keyboard got you all hot and excited?
Or a new kind of mouse got you all wound up? The
computer add-ons, accessories and peripherals market
is very definitely sliced up into very rigid segments.
For Microsoft, this foray into the hardware business
is not new, but the aggression and approach is.
Since the success of the Xbox and 360, the product
and hardware business is something that they started
looking at very belligerently. The Vista special
keyboards are chargeable, have track-pads built
in, full multimedia controls and all the new Vista
special buttons. |

| A village belle throws her earthen
pot in a well, does a somersault and catches it,
filled with water. Farmers hover over fields as
they harvest their crops. Women jump high in the
air while grinding spices. A homely wife spins a
roti on her fingertip and then tosses it to her
husband having his food way out in the field. “Welcome
to the amazing world of Xbox 360. Game on.”
Says Mohit Anand, country manager, Microsoft Entertainment
and Devices Division, India, “We had to take
the concept of gaming out of a teenage boy’s
bedroom and expand the segment to include families
and even your office colleagues.” |

| Xbox has stolen a lead over
Playstation, but its 3-D virtual reality is still
perceptibly too virtual. If you think investment
advisors are not known for loyalty, meet Amit Mamgain,
27. He was a Sony Playstation loyalist for more
than two years, ever since he got hooked to the
PS2. Already has, claims Mohit Anand, Country Manager,
Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division, adding
all the same that, “It is not a 100 meter
dash we are looking at, it is a marathon, and the
first step has been pretty phenomenal.” |

Excerpts from an interview with
PeterM
How do you view the Indian gaming market, and how
big is the opportunity in this nascent gaming space?
India is similar to many other markets that are
developing interest in gaming. It is a young country
with entertainment flowing through its veins, lot
of computer science degrees, and student passing
out of universities who are comfortable with technology.
I believe that the broadband infrastructure will
act as a catalyst for the growth of the gaming space
here. |
