MIT provides worldwide access
to education through .NET
Profile
Located in Boston, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) is among the top-notch educational institutes of the
world. MIT's OpenCourseWare (OCW) is an online hub for free
educational resources for faculty, students, and self-learners
from around the world.
Known for its focus on technology, MIT is a leader in all
streams of education and boasts of some of the best industry
associations.
MIT's mission is to advance knowledge and education, and
serve the world in the 21st century, while it's values focus
on excellence, innovation, and leadership.
Customer Situation
MIT wanted to provide educators in the nonprofit sector,
students, and individual learners around the world with
free, searchable, coherent access to MIT's course materials.
They wanted to create an efficient, standards-based
model that other Universities may emulate to publish
their own course materials. MIT immediately realized
that they needed a publishing infrastructure that would
streamline the publishing process, and reduce production
costs. The timeline to go online however was tight. |
This is really, really big! Early on, when we
first realized that we needed a CMS, experts told
us it would take a year to implement one. Here
we are, six months after making our CMS decision,
with a smoothly running system supporting our
rather complex publishing process. This is truly
an astonishing accomplishment.

This recognition underscores Sapient's track record
for developing large-scale client solutions using
Microsoft technologies. With Microsoft's .NET
platform and Windows Server System, including
Content Management Server 2002, we were able to
help MIT achieve its goals of organizing massive
amounts of course materials in a way that is easy
for educators, students and self-learners to navigate
and adapt, based on their unique needs.

Solution
Sapient worked with MIT to define a business process
that covered the entire lifecycle of planning, content
creation, publication, content delivery and evaluation.
Based on Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 and
the .NET framework, they built a system for creating
and managing content, along with a publication engine
responsible for extracting content and publishing it,
which could be accessed by the end-users.
Benefits
MIT's OpenCourseWare (OCW), which is an online hub
for free educational resources for faculty, students
and self-learners from around the world, is one of the
largest Microsoft Content Management implementations
ever deployed. Due to this online implementation, OCW
has received users from every corner of the globe, including
Antartica. |
Since the launch of 500 courses in September 2003, the site
has averaged about 11,000 users per day, generating more than
14 million page views as of December 31, 2003. Importantly,
the Total Cost of Ownership is significantly low and the stringent
implementation timelines were adhered to.
