Nestlé India lowers TCO by migrating to .NET

Profile

Nestlé India Ltd. is the leader in beverages, milk products and nutrition, prepared dishes, and cooking aids. A subsidiary of Nestlé S A of Switzerland, Nestlé India is acknowledged as one of India's 'Most Respected Companies' and one of the 'Top Wealth Creators'. The company is committed to long-term sustainable growth and shareholder satisfaction. Over nine decades, it has built a very special relationship based on commitment and trust with its consumers.

Customer Situation

Nestlé India collects milk from almost 90,000 farmers in Moga. Payments to the farmers are determined by the quality of the milk they supply.

Nestlé India had a Milk Management System (MMS), which was a comprehensive PowerBuilder and Oracle based thin client system covering business functions such as Milk Collection and Transfer, Quality Analysis, Payment, Operations, Monitoring and Forecast. However, it wanted to shift current applications, running on various platforms onto a common platform.

During the course of the project, the NIIT team showed a strong professional commitment, which was decisive in overcoming the functional and technical complexitites and finally ensuring success.

The project was important to both Nestlé and NIIT. It was a challenging task to deliver the product on time, especially when technical challenges such as business rules extraction, replication of PowerBuilder like UI features, complex customisation features, third party product integration and integration of multicountry requirements were to be dealt with.

Solution

Nestlé approached NIIT to convert the MMS application environment to that of Visual Basic .NET and SQL Server 2000.

The new application, Raw Milk Procurement System (RMPS), has made room for additional functionalities, thus making the application scalable and flexible.

Benefits

Nestlé monitored a significantly lower Total Cost of Ownership with the RMPS.

The decentralization of data entry has eliminated historical errors, and ensured sanctity of data. The .NET framework ensures scalability to accommodate all future functional needs.

Successfully deployed at two of the Nestlé factories in India and one in Sri Lanka, the solution is soon to be implemented in Indonesia and Pakistan.
