Tanishq treasures its .NET
enabled Point-of-Sale system, integrating the retail network
with the enterprise.
Profile
Tanishq India Ltd. is a leading brand in the designer jewelry
business. Their business model is retail-centric with over
80 exclusive retail boutiques across India.
Customer Situation
The company had a Point-of-Sale (POS) system at their boutiques.
Developed in-house on FoxPro, the system was not scalable
to the growing business and the evolving market environment.
| Tanishq wanted to address the limitations
of their POS system, and implement an integrated solution
that seamlessly connected the retail network and also
facilitated enterprise-wide management of the solution.
The peak buying season for jewelry begins in October
and continues for about five months through the festive
season. They had only six months to design, develop,
and deploy a stable system, ready for the peak business
season.
Solution
Tanishq engaged with MindTree Consulting to implement the
solution. |
The
need was to provide a solution that can scale
from a small boutique to a large one. The solution
had to adapt to changing gold prices and take
care of complexities caused by various selling
options. Also, the entire solution had to be developed
and implemented before the festival season.

Microsoft
.NET technology helped us meet a very aggressive
schedule our customer had in mind. Microsoft .NET remoting feature came in very handy in implementing
a very flexible deployment model in a cost effective
manner.
Features like reflection, user controls, .NET
serviced components, Crystal object model were used
effectively to reduce lines of code and re-use
components across the application. Reusability thus
achieved reduced testing effort and helped us build
a very robust and good quality product in a short
span of time and ensured customer satisfaction.

Individual POS applications have
been deployed across the boutiques, and connected to
a single enterprise system hosted at the Corporate Office.
The enterprise system has been designed to manage corporate
level 'masters update' for all the boutiques, and it
consolidates the transactional data from the boutiques
into one central database for MIS reporting and backup.
The boutique systems and the enterprise application
talk to each other via asynchronous file exchange or
over .NET remoting.
With this architecture in place, individual boutiques
can get the latest gold rates, item master updates,
price updates, discount scheme details, etc., anytime
of the day by synchronizing with the enterprise system.
Similarly, the central system can access the latest
transactional data from all boutiques, thus ensuring
accurate and timely reporting. |
Benefits
The solution offers a full-proof way of updating data across
the boutiques in a controlled fashion. Formerly this was done
by couriering data floppies to the centralized destination.
The deployed application has streamlined the data exchange
process, thereby eliminating historical data issues.
The accounting module, integrated in the enterprise system,
accesses the end-of-day transaction data uploaded by each
boutique, thereby keeping the “books of account” up-todate.
The system is flexible enough with parameters, designed to
accommodate dynamically changing business needs. It has built-in
support for dual unit of measure - a requirement unique to
the jewelry industry.
Tanishq is now assured of better operations management, timely
updates and faster customer checkouts.
