Rock-Tenn seamlessly integrates
disparate systems using .NET
Profile
Rock-Tenn, based in Norcross, Georgia, manufactures packaging
products, merchandising displays, and recycled paperboard.
It operates more than 70 manufacturing facilities across North
and South America.
Customer Situation
The Alliance division at Rock-Tenn has emerged as a business
leader over the past few years. Over time, the division had
implemented several disparate systems that created inefficiencies
throughout the Alliance organization.
| Vital project information was scattered
across many standalone systems. This included information
related to Computer-Aided Design (CAD), specifications
drawings for corrugated packaging, instructions for
assembling the displays in the retail setting, data
on the inventories of goods, and schedules for coordinating
production and deliveries to retail outlets.
In the absence of an integrated system, Alliance users
and Managers had to refer to several data sources in
order to determine the status of an order; customers
often had to confer with multiple Alliance employees
to get an overall understanding of the status of a project.
So, the need for a seamlessly integrated system emerged. |
BizTalk
Server has provided the common language to pull
all of our systems together in what would otherwise
be a very dissimilar vernacular, streamlining
communications to make our company even more competitive.

BizTalk
Server 2004 is completely integrated with Visual
Studio .NET, which means there's just one interface
to do everything. The integration makes it much
easier to cross-train a development team, which
lowers the business risk associated with having
only a few people who know a lot about the systems.

Solution
Rock-Tenn worked with Sapient Technologies in India
to develop a comprehensive system that would improve
the visibility of data and better integrate its various
business systems.
Sapient created a solution using Visual Studio .NET
that integrated the data needs with the robust BizTalk
Server 2004. The first phase enabled a smooth flow of
information related to bills of materials and consistent
project numbering across multiple business systems.
The second phase encapsulated capabilities for viewing
and analyzing the details and overall progress of the
project execution. |
Benefits
The BizTalk Server 2004 enabled Rock-Tenn to integrate data
units more easily and manage the complex process environment
needed to deliver projects to Alliance division customers.
BizTalk Server provided Rock-Tenn with the ability to track
all the work related to a project through a single project
identifier. The Project ID enables designers, project coordinators,
estimators, and manufacturing and assembly personnel to communicate
effectively and stay abreast of the latest developments on
a project, even though they may all use different business
systems.
BizTalk Server efficiently passes messages about project
lifecycle events and ensures that critical project data such
as the bills of material is transferred promptly, without
duplication, between the business systems.
Centralizing all project data has enabled the Alliance division
to have a better overall understanding of the projects and
the project execution as compared to what was formerly possible.
