Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) is one of the top
three petroleum refineries and marketing companies in India.
It produces petroleum products, petrochemicals, and speciality
lubricants. Currently, they enjoy a 22% share of the petroleum
products market.
Customer Situation
With the deregulation of the Oil sector, the market
for petroleum products in India has become highly competitive.
BPCL's strategy has always been to stay ahead of competition
by delivering quality to customers.
The company had already implemented a Laboratory Information
Management System (LIMS) at its refinery in Mumbai,
to provide its Engineers with greater control on the
quality of products in process. However, the LIMS format
did not entirely meet the information requirements of
users at the plant.
BPCL needed to devise a pipeline of information flow
between its laboratory and its plant, and ensure that
key knowledge was made available instantly across all
desktops in the company. |

aim is to present a dashboard view of real-time
information, to assist each department to take
decisions on time and achieve their key performance
indicators.

Solution
BPCL's development partners ProcessBiz Technologies
used Microsoft's .NET framework to develop a browser
based interface to LIMS. The solution integrates information
from LIMS, the ERP system, and the plant process information
system in order to enhance functionalities and extend
its usage to other areas.
It gives laboratory results of sample analysis and
provides Business Intelligence on product quality and
the relevant parameters. As a measure of customer care,
the system also prints a Quality Certificate, relevant
to the product being sold.
Users now have instant and secure access to the system
from any desktop connected to the intranet. Most interestingly,
BPCL was able to achieve this while keeping additional
software investments to a minimum. |
Benefits
The .NET based solution, deployed by BPCL ensured secure
and instant access, recorded time efficiency, improved productivity
and assured customers of quality products, alongside protecting
the company's investments on existing applications.
Implementation of the solution recorded significant cost
savings, reduction in deployment time, and provided higher
flexibility to developers.
Apart from reducing maintenance and support costs incurred
earlier, the solution supported troubleshooting issues such
as users' inability to access SampleManager at their desktops.
The online Quality Certification at product delivery points
supports BPCL's strategy of quality assurance to customers.
