Gurpreet S. Pall
General Manager – OSD R&D at MSIDC,

Gurpreet S. Pall is the General Manager, Online Services Division, at MSIDC Hyderabad. Prior to this role, he has held leadership positions at Microsoft Corp. USA as Senior Director of Architecture Strategy with Developer and Platform Evangelism, and Product Unit Manager in the Windows Engineering group responsible for incubating Microsoft Systems Architecture (MSA) and related infrastructure solutions and programs.

Over his 18+ year career at Microsoft, Gurpreet has delivered several key products and solutions to Microsoft’s customers, partners and internal operations. He has played key roles in the planning and delivery of products such as Microsoft Excel, Office and solutions in the areas of sales force automation and empowerment, knowledge management and IT services.

He holds a B-Com (Honors) Degree from St. Xavier’s College Kolkata, and a Masters of Management degree from Willamette University, Salem, Oregon.

Overview

Bing is Microsoft’s consumer web search service powering both MSN and Bing.com. The Bing team at MSIDC is chartered with driving key initiatives of Microsoft’s search strategy for local and web search. Its vision is to enable people everywhere to gain knowledge from the web by computationally understanding user intent and matching that with published content, advertizing offerings and software services in markets like UK, Canada and India.

The Bing relevance team is looking at identifying the key problems that affect search relevance UK, Canada and India.

The local team works on number of services for emerging markets like India, such as Bing Maps and Bing for Mobile for India.

The Instant Answers team has rolled out relevant answers for emerging markets like India and has expanded its charter to roll out global answers.

The Search Monetization team monetizes the Bing Search results by providing ads in international markets with the help of third party ad providers and optimizes the revenue by experimenting new features and ad layouts.

  • Onboarded Yandex, a provider in Russia and shipped Y!SM ads in Belgium for French language in August.
  • Shipped a new neural net and improved alteration in UK increased relevance by 2.2 NDCG points, surpassing Yahoo’s in August.

Relevance

The focus is on increasing the relevance of web search results for Indian users. The team does involved investigations to uncover the search pipeline areas that are hurting relevance the most for the markets of UK, Canada and India and works to alleviate them. Since its inception, it has released new rankers for UK, Canada and India, and shipped improved query alteration services for these markets.


Instant Answers

This technology provides highly relevant snippets of information (answers) for key verticals. These snippets provide a brief summary on the information the user is looking for and gives links for a deeper information drill down . The Instant Answers team at MSIDC has rolled out relevant answers for Emerging Markets like India and has expanded its charter to roll out global answers.


Tools

The focus is on creating tools which can help create experiences on Bing using Structured data.


Monetization

The focus is on monetizing the Bing Search results by providing ads in international markets with the help of 3rd party ad providers and optimize the revenue by experimenting new features and ad layouts.


Bing Local / Maps and Mobile

Team is focused on providing immersive and compelling maps and local search experience to the Indian PC/Mobile users without any carrier dependency and feeding these learnings back into the global platforms. One initiative of enriching global platform was Map Style Editor where map designers can author a map very intuitively – it was built from scratch at IDC by this team. As part of winning the Indian consumers in this space, we are expanding the coverage to 60+ cities and constantly innovating the bringing them to users very quickly.


Live Search on Web

The focus is on increasing the relevance of web search results for Indian users. The team does involved investigations to uncover the search pipeline areas that are hurting relevance for India the most and works to alleviate them. Since its inception, it has released a new ranker for India, shipped an improved Speller and released augmentations that have significantly improved Live Search relevance for the Indian market.
