Overview

Platform technologies for delivering reliable and scalable hosted application and desktop virtualization.

The Remote Desktop Virtualization (RDV) group is a part of the $13 billion Microsoft Server and Tools business. Remote virtualization technology enables remote execution of desktop applications on a server from a wide range of devices over virtually any type of network connection. In Windows server, this role is known as Remote Desktop Services (earlier known as Terminal Services).

In conjunction with Microsoft’s virtual server – the Hypervisor – the Remote Desktop Virtualization platform provides full multimedia support on the desktop with 100% coverage for all media types, including support for Windows Vista Aero as well as Direct X and WPF based applications at a lower cost per user than a traditional PC architecture. This unique, patent-pending graphics virtualization technology, using server based GPUs, achieves highest user density per server while supporting a high-fidelity user experience.

Centralized Windows allows enterprise customers back-office levels of security, compliance, disaster/ recovery and availability while substantially lowering their desktop capital and management expenses. In Windows 2008 R2, together with the Hyper-V and System Center teams, Remote Desktop Services would enable the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution to enable consolidating desktops as Virtual Machines apart from the traditional session based model of Remote Desktop Services. VDI enables full fidelity desktop experience without the overhead of managing a costly infrastructure of PCs.

The mission of the MSIDC team is to define and develop the Remote Desktop Virtualization Services platform to enable:

  • Hosted Desktop and Applications Service
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
  • Centralized Windows for Emerging and Academic Markets

The MSIDC team works with Microsoft’s global product marketing team to define the business opportunities and with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Windows OS Kernel and .Net technologies while focusing on enhancing manageability, scalability, reliability and security of the RDV platform to enable large scale real world desktop and application hosting services.

What’s new in Windows Server 2008 R2 RDS?

With Remote Desktop Services (RDS), one of the core virtualization technologies available in Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft is progressing in its vision to provide the best virtualization platform for accelerating and extending desktop and application deployments from the data center to any device. In addition to the traditional presentation virtualization scenario (formerly known as “Terminal Services”), Remote Desktop Services is expanding its role to provide an extensible platform for a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
