Anil Bhansali
General Manager, Windows & Windows Live Group, MSIDC

Anil Bhansali is the General Manager of the Windows and Windows Live Group in MSIDC. The Windows group has delivered on key features for Windows 7 in the areas of Networking, Wireless WAN, Client Virtualization and improving customer experience through work on inbox applications. The WinSE team services all the released versions of Windows. The Windows Live Team is working on a service centric approach which allows users to access any data and any application, at any time and on any device. The team is also working on building a platform for partner development, syndication and notification by SMS, mail and messenger.

Anil started his career at Microsoft in 1991 and was part of the Office division working on MS Excel for various releases. Prior to moving to MSIDC he was the Partner Development Manager of Windows Sharepoint Services. He relocated to India in 2003 as Director of Windows Live Platforms Services Group and was responsible for setting up and building the MSN and Live groups at MSIDC.

The MSIDC team owns applications that are shipped with Windows, such as Paint, Calculator, WordPad, Notepad, Sticky Notes and Gadgets. Their work highlights how other ISVs can use the Windows platform to provide real value to their users. Some of the platforms that they work with are Windows Ribbon, Multi-touch, Real time Stylus, Sensor and Location, Rich text framework, and Gadget Platform.

The MSIDC team uses Windows System APIs, C/ C++, html, Jscript for application development.

Windows Ribbon: The next generation user experience for presenting commands in Win32 applications

Paint and WordPad are two of the first consumers of the Windows Ribbon. The platform provides a rich, graphical user interface for all commands in a single place, without the need to expose functions and commands under different menus or toolbars.

Developing Multi-touch Applications

Paint and WordPad have used the new Multi-touch platform to create natural and intuitive experiences for the end users. The platform empowers developers and ISVs to deliver natural and intuitive scenarios to end-users in their applications.

The Sensor and Location Platform: Building Context-Aware Applications

Weather gadget uses the Sensor and Location Platform to show weather at the computer’s current location. The platform paves the way to build context aware applications.

Location aware weather gadget

On a GPS enabled laptop, the weather gadget uses the new location platform to find out where you are and shows the local weather.

Always available

Even when you go offline, weather, and currency data are still available on gadgets and it shows timestamp on how old the data is. If you have been offline for the whole day, the weather gadget shows today’s weather as forecasted yesterday!

New intuitive calculator modes

Choose one of the four easy to use calculator modes - the Standard, Scientific, Statistics or the Programmer for your calculation needs.

Unit conversion, Date calculation, and Worksheets

Convert between commonly used units in over 10 categories by using the new Unit conversion capability. You can use the date calculation capability to find out the duration between two dates, or calculate a new date by adding or subtracting duration from a date. Calculation worksheets help you to do everyday calculations such as fuel economy, mortgage, and vehicle lease.
