Microsoft entered India in 1990 and has since worked closely with the Indian government, IT industry, academia and local developer community for ushering in some of the early successes in the realm of IT. Microsoft currently has offices in 16 cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jamshedpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, and Pune. Increasingly, Microsoft is becoming a key IT partner to the Indian government and the industry. Since its advent, Microsoft has been supporting and fueling the growth of the local IT industry through its partner enablement programs. Since its entry into India, Microsoft has focused on three things, namely:

  • Becoming a key IT partner to the Indian government and the industry
  • Supporting and fueling the growth of the local IT industry through its partner enablement programs
  • Under Microsoft Unlimited Potential, enhancing education, jobs and opportunities and fostering innovation through relevant, affordable access to computing.
Microsoft in India employs about 5000 people and has six business units in India representing the complete Microsoft product lifecycle.

Venkatesan is responsible for Microsoft's marketing, operational and business development efforts in the country. He plays an integral role in defining Microsoft's relationship with policy makers, customers and business partners across Microsoft's distinct business units in India.

Gates visits India, announces $1.7 billion investment focused on innovating in and for India.
Microsoft Research launches operations at Microsoft Research India (MSR India), Bangalore.
2003:
Project Bhasha announced
Partners in Learning (Project Shiksha) launched
Microsoft opens Global Technical Support Center (GTSC), in Bangalore.
 
2002:
Microsoft IT launches operations in India.
Gates visits India, announces plan to invest $100 million in Hyderabad center.
 
2000:
Gates visits India, announces alliance with Infosys.
 
1998:
Launch of India Development Center in Hyderabad, India, the second largest development center outside the US facility in Redmond.
 
1997:
Chairman Bill Gates visits India.
 
1990:
