Kanha National Park uses Microsoft Technology Solutions
Citizen-centric governance is necessary for the empowerment and development of people. Innovations in technology promote the use of ICT in the public sector to improve information and service delivery and help the government in its goals of being accountable, transparent and effective.
Deep in a forest, an ember smolders, setting alight dry undergrowth. Unseen by human eyes, flames lick at a cluster of trees. A plume of grey smoke signals that yet another forest fire has begun to rage. Near real-time satellite imagery of this hotspot is transmitted to a command centre. Field officers are alerted through instant messages and emails on their personal digital assistants (PDAs). Forest officers swing into action.
The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, with the help of Microsoft's technology solutions, now averts some 3,800 forest fires a year. The solutions package also records wildlife sightings and links 27,000 officials to the command center.
But forest managers must account for forest dwellers as well - the application maps the land holdings of the villagers around the forest. An officer walks the perimeter of each property, PDA in hand. A few clicks uplink geo-coordinates along with a photo of the landholding couple. This means that the forest dwellers now have documentation of their holdings, enabling them to gain title rightfully.
