Microsoft is committed to software and technology innovation that helps people and organizations around the world improve the environment. Our goals are to reduce the impact of our own operations and products and to drive responsible environmental leadership.

Energy efficiency is a foundational principle in the design of our products, helping our customers run a more efficient IT infrastructure. For instance, Windows 7 puts organisations in control of desktop energy consumption. By putting computers to sleep at the end of the day or during breaks, energy consumption can be significantly reduced. Microsoft's unified communications solutions which include online conferencing and desktop sharing have also streamlined communication and collaboration, reducing the need for business travel and commuting.

Our commitment to the environment goes beyond our products. Our researchers work with scientists and institutions to accelerate scientific breakthroughs on renewable energy and environmental modeling.

Environment sustainability is also at the core of our own business practices and reflects in how we support our employees to make more sustainable choices by constantly driving for better efficiency. For instance, at our Hyderabad campus, our newest building is LEED accredited. Glass expanses flood workspaces with natural light, minimising lighting that burns fossil fuels, while LED bulbs reduce consumption by another 50 percent.
