Microsoft entered India in 1990 and has since worked closely with the Indian government, IT industry, academia and local developer community for ushering in some of the early successes in the realm of IT. In partnership with various stakeholders it has and continues to undertake several initiatives aimed at enhancing competitiveness across industries, developing the local software ecosystem and creating affordable access to computing across India.

Now, empowered by the complete end-to-end representation of its business, from research to support, Microsoft will further this mission by Innovating from, for and with India.

Microsoft currently employs over 5000 plus people across its six business units:
 

Microsoft Research India (MSR India)

MSR India focuses on basic and applied research in the areas of Cryptography, Security and Algorithms, Digital Geographics, Mobility, Networks, and Systems, Multilingual Systems, Rigorous Software Engineering and Technology for Emerging Markets. MSR India works closely with academia, the government and industry to further the state-of-the-art in computer science research in the country, and to increase the pipeline of world class researchers in the country.

Microsoft India Development Center (MSIDC)

Located in Hyderabad, MIDC plays a critical role in Microsoft's global product development initiatives and future product innovations. Some of the key development initiatives from MIDC include Data Protection Manager, RFID Platform Technologies, Office Mobile, Windows SFU, Features of Longhorn, Visual Studio, Office Live Meeting and Microsoft-CRM.

Microsoft Global Services India (MGSI)

MGSI, based in Hyderabad, is involved in the architecture and design of large, complex and challenging engagements or solutions based on cutting-edge Microsoft technologies. MGSI has some of the best and the brightest minds in information technology industry who serve the needs of global clients worldwide for their technology consulting and leading solution development and deployment. In addition, MGSI drives the delivery engine for competitive migration activities.

Microsoft IT-India

Microsoft IT India is located in Hyderabad and is a seamless extension of the Microsoft IT teams in Redmond. Microsoft IT-India is a five year old organization with talented IT professionals who consider the Centre a great place to build their career dreams and aspirations under the leadership of Moorthy Uppaluri.

Microsoft IT-India is an offshore arm of the strategic Centre's of Excellence (CoE’s) comprising  a variety of niche technologies that Microsoft deploys in developing mission critical business applications that are deployed for internal Microsoft use.

Sales and Marketing Services Group (SMSG)

This marketing subsidiary comes under Microsoft Corporation, India, and commenced its operations in India in 1990. Today the company has 7 offices spread across Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Chennai, engaged in consulting and marketing of Microsoft products.

Global Technical Support Center (GTSC)

GTSC in Bangalore focuses on providing high level technical resolution services to English-speaking customers and partners across the globe. Part of the Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) organization it supports over 170 Microsoft products.

Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD)

Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division was created in September 2005 to support the company's software-based services vision and drive innovation in the digital entertainment space.

MSN

MSN is the preferred online destination for Indians across the globe. In keeping with its motto, to make the web more useful everyday, MSN continues to offer award-winning E-mail functionality, customizable access to the best of online content like news, lifestyle, sports and popular sites like travel, entertainment etc. MSN started operations in September 2000 and today has over 12.5 million unique users on its network.

Chairman, Microsoft India

Venkatesan is responsible for Microsoft's marketing, operational and business development efforts in the country. He plays an integral role in defining Microsoft's relationship with policy makers, customers and business partners across Microsoft's distinct business units in India.
 
 

1990: Microsoft sets up India Operations as Microsoft India Corporation (Pvt) Ltd. in New Delhi.

1997: Chairman Bill Gates visits India.

1998: Launch of India Development Center in Hyderabad, India, the second largest development center outside the US facility in Redmond.

2000: Gates visits India, announces alliance with Infosys.

2002: Gates visits India, announces plan to invest $100 million in Hyderabad center, double staff to 500 by 2005.

2002: Microsoft IT launches operations in India with GDCI, now known as Microsoft IT-India.

2003: Microsoft opens Global Technical Support Center (GTSC), in Bangalore.

2005: Microsoft Research launches operations at Microsoft Research India (MSR India), Bangalore.

2005: Gates visits India, announces $1.7 billion investment focused on innovating in and for India.
