Every
PC needs a licence for every software package installed
Some people think that having a copy of the software
is all that's needed to be allowed to install and
use Windows. This is not true. If Windows is to
be installed on a PC it needs to be properly licensed.
So what does that mean? |

There
are only 2 ways to get a Windows licence, OEM or
a FPP
To licence Windows on a PC there are only two choices,
an OEM licence which is pre-installed on the PC
by the System Builder (PC assembler) or an FPP which
can be bought from retailers or resellers. Pre-installed
OEM software is always more cost effective than
FPP. |

Volume
licensing only covers Windows operating system upgrades
Some people think that having a Volume Licence Agreement
means they don't need to buy a licence for Windows
when they want to install it on a new PC. This is
not true. Volume licences can only be used to cover
the upgrade of a PC once it has the initial operating
system already installed. This is true of ALL types
of volume licence agreement, including academic
agreements. |

OEM
operating system licences live and die with each
PC - they are not transferable
If a PC with an OEM Windows Licence is to be replaced
then a new licence is needed for the replacement
PC. This applies even if the old PC no longer has
Windows installed or if it is destroyed. |
