| Understanding ‘Pay-As-You-Go’
Model |
| |
| Q. |
How does a Pay-As-You-Go PC differ from a
traditional PC? |
| |
|
| A. |
| In
functionality, a Pay-As-You-Go PC is
identical to a traditional Windows XP
PC. The difference is that the PC
contains provisions to enable tracking of time
of the PC and payments to add time. |
| |
|
| Q. |
How is the purchasing model for a
Pay-As-You-Go
PC different from that of a prepaid mobile
phone? |
| |
|
| A. |
| As with
prepaid mobile phones, customers
recharge time by getting Pay-As-You-Go PC
recharge tokens which are available
online or
at nearby retail outlets. Similar to a
prepaid mobile phone, customers enter a
code in the
Pay-As-You-Go PC to add time. In contrast to a
prepaid mobile
phone, where payment must be made in
perpetuity, a Pay-As-You-Go PC only
requires a certain number of hours
to be used. Once this limit is
reached, the customer owns the PC and
has unlimited access to it. |
| |
|
| Q. |
How long does the customer has to recharge
the PC ? |
| |
|
| A. |
| The
number of hours required is determined
by financial institution partners based
on the amount being financed, and the
expected usage. |
| |
|
| Q. |
Under a "Pay-As-You-Go" computing
model, would a PC cost more than if a customer
bought it outright? |
| |
|
| A. |
| As with
conventional financing, the total cost
of a computer bought under the
Pay-As-You-Go
computing model is higher than the cost
of a computer purchased outright. Compared
to conventional financing,
Pay-As-You-Go
provides more flexibility since the
customer repays for the loan as he or she
uses PC, rather than on a fixed payment
schedule determined by the lender. Furthermore,
Microsoft® FlexGo™ technology
turns an unsecured asset into a secured
asset, permitting lower interest rates. |
| |
|
| Q. |
What if the customer does not add more usage
time? |
| |
|
| A. |
| As with
a prepaid mobile phone, the
Pay-As-You-Go
PC will stop functioning if usage time
runs out on the PC. However, unlike
a mobile phone, the Pay-As-You-Go PC
has a built-in "reserve tank".
Several alerts appear as time runs down
so that the user has ample time to save
files and add more time. Once time has
expired, the PC uses the "reserve
tank", in which the user has a
few hours of limited access to their
PC to perform critical tasks. |
