Volume License and Online Services Keys

Microsoft includes product activation technology in some products sold through original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and retail channels. Most licenses acquired through Microsoft Volume Licensing do not need to be activated. However, Volume Licensing customers must enter a Volume License Key (VLK) or an Online Services Key (OSK) when installing from some Volume Licensing media.

What Is a Volume License Key?
A VLK is a product key that is issued to a specific customer under a specific license agreement. Each VLK is associated with a particular customer and type of product for which the customer is licensed. Use your VLKs when you are installing a product or creating a custom image for designing and maintaining a standardized desktop. An image created by using the VLK and Volume Licensing media can be reimaged onto any computer without requiring activation.
Note VLKs can be used only with Volume Licensing media; they cannot be used with retail full packaged product or OEM CD media.

How Do I Deploy with a Volume License or Online Services Key and Volume Licensing Media?
Volume Licensing media for affected products will no longer include a preconfigured product ID or a product key on the CD packaging. You must use the appropriate VLK or OSK for desktop and network administrator installations.
The VLK or OSK is assigned to your organization and is intended for its sole use. You must take reasonable and appropriate measures to ensure that this product key is used only to install and distribute licenses pursuant to the terms of your agreement.
