Microsoft Above and Beyond Everyday Difference Award
Todd Schmidt
On patrol in Afghanistan, U.S. Major Schmidt came up with an idea to provide school supplies for local kids. He never dreamed he would help build a school, too.

Todd is a U.S. Army Major and has served as a soldier for the past 11 years.
During his most recent deployment to Operation Enduring Freedom, he founded a non-profit organization, Operation Dreamseed
(www.operationdreamseed.org). Its initial mission was to provide school supplies for impoverished Afghani children, but it has grown a lot in just four years.

Today, hundreds of volunteers and donors from across the U.S. have sent hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of math textbooks, school supplies, and secondhand clothes to Afghanistan, and they've begun sending school supplies to local villages in Iraq and Kosovo. Under Todd's leadership, Operation Dreamseed has even helped build a school outside Kandahar City by raising

over $80,000 for the cause.

All of the donations are distributed by American soldiers. This helps establish good will and trust with local people, who are then more likely to inform the troops of danger. Operation Dreamseed has worked with Boy and Girl Scout troops, church groups, schools, businesses, other service organizations, and everyday Americans for this important cause.

Todd believes that the long-term solutions to the conflicts we now face in Iraq and Afghanistan are better solved through education and humanitarian assistance that provides for basic human security. When people feel secure, they feel at peace. Todd is also making a big difference in improving the morale and safety of our troops abroad.
