A public cloud offers services delivered from an external provider on an infrastructure shared with the general public, providing a cost-effective and agile model for many day-to-day operations. However, privacy, confidentiality, and security requirements may reduce the appeal of a public cloud for some government agencies.

A private cloud offers the benefits of cloud computing within an infrastructure dedicated solely to your organization, whether it is managed by your organization or a contractor and on or off premises. A private cloud can also offer flexibility, cost savings, and agility, but you control the security, privacy, customization, and governance of your software and services.

Or you can have it both ways by taking a hybrid cloud approach—create a private cloud for your most sensitive data, and use public cloud services for less sensitive information.
