Microsoft Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Innovation Awards 2009
Microsoft announced the winners on June 22, 2009 at the DIA 45th annual meeting in San Diego.
Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, and Medical Device companies are uniquely positioned to improve the quality of health through therapeutic innovations based on sound life science research and smart use of technology. The Microsoft Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Innovation Award is an opportunity to show to the medical community, consumers and patients how your company is using new technology to revolutionize medicine by bringing therapeutic breakthroughs to the market faster, to fight serious ailments, improve healthcare and enhance people's quality of life.
The Microsoft Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Innovation Award will be presented annually to the company which applies technology to accomplish innovation excellence by improving the productivity of discovery and innovation, the effectiveness of research and development, the efficiency of manufacturing and supply chain processes, the effectiveness of sales and marketing, and the optimization of business operations.

Award categories and judging criteria
Judges will pick one winner in each of the four categories listed below. The solution (or combination of solutions) can be offered by any company worldwide as long as it is based on the latest Microsoft technologies such as BizTalk Server, Windows Server, MOSS 2007, Windows Mobile, SQL Server, Microsoft Surface, or the Office System 2007 to name a few. The award emphasizes the innovative application of available software and devices, and the creation of new solutions.
The award categories and how they will be judged include:
Sales and marketing
Entries will be judged on three criteria:
1. | The innovation represents a breakthrough from the industry's historical approaches. |
2. | The innovation goes beyond incremental improvements on technologies that already exist. |
3. | The innovation enhances the company's ability to inform and educate physicians, and ultimately healthcare consumers, about the value of life sciences products and innovations. |
Manufacturing and supply chain
Entries will be judged on three criteria:
1. | The innovation represents a breakthrough from the industry's historical approaches. |
2. | The innovation goes beyond incremental improvements on technologies that already exist. |
3. | The innovation improves the company's ability to improve speed and quality in manufacturing, supply chain management, and product lifecycle management. |
Discovery and product innovation
Entries will be judged on three criteria:
1. | The innovation represents a breakthrough from the industry's historical approaches. |
2. | The innovation goes beyond incremental improvements on technologies that already exist. |
3. | The innovation improves the company's ability to get safer and more efficacious products to market faster by reducing complexity, lowering cost, and enhancing the speed and quality of the discovery process. |
Clinical development
Entries will be judged on three criteria:
1. | The innovation represents a breakthrough from the industry's historical approaches. |
2. | The innovation goes beyond incremental improvements on technologies that already exist. |
3. | The innovation improves the company's ability to improve both time to market and quality during in the process of conducting clinical trials, analysis, and submission. |
