What is the PI System?
WHAT: The PI System is a high performance real-time data infrastructure that brings all operational data into a single system and presents that information across the enterprise in a secure and scalable fashion. Role-based views into the data provide the right information at the right time in the right format.
Built on the Windows Server 2008 Enterprise operating system and Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008, the PI System creates a streaming archival database from more than 500 types of operational data sources, including enterprise resource planning systems such as SAP R/3 and Oracle. It then uses SharePoint Server 2007, Excel Services, and Microsoft PerformancePoint Services to transform the data into dynamic real-time plant floor reports and key performance indicators that users can view with the familiar Microsoft Office system interface. The results can be viewed in rich, process-oriented displays or on thin-client dashboards.
HOW: The PI System keeps all critical operating data online and highly available in a specialized time-series database and provides the means to analyze and visualize the information to support company-wide analysis and decision making. OSIsoft's PI System enables creation of dynamic plant floor Office Business Applications (OBAs) and gives companies user-friendly ways to combine real-time data with other data sources, associate that data with equipment or other assets in SAP, and impose business rules to detect meaningful real-time events.
