Why are local and regional governments important to Microsoft?

As well as being major employers, local and regional governments are also rapidly becoming the first point of contact for citizens to access services online. But our aging populations mean that they will have to support twice as many citizens in five years as they do today. In addition, compliance with e-government targets presents new challenges for local agencies, as IT skills are increasingly hard to find and retain.

To meet these demands, investment in effective information and communications technology (ICT) is critical. At Microsoft, we have a unique business model to help address these challenges.

Government IT and the local economy: A marketplace for growing businesses

While the return on investment for customers is often the focus for ICT projects, it's important to determine how the investment impacts the local economy. This is one area where investing with Microsoft can make a real difference. Our unique partner model encourages and promotes local partners alongside strategic global providers. It maximizes customer choice and delivers as much value as possible back into the local economy.

Microsoft has many thousands of solution partners throughout the world that create and support a significant number of jobs in the ICT sector. For example, approximately 90 percent of every euro spent on Microsoft-based IT projects will be delivered by implementation partners. We have catalogued our worldwide partners by solution relevance in the Microsoft Public Sector Partner Solution MarketPlace, an easy-to-use resource that helps you to find the solution you need. It also offers a promotion tool for our many thousands of partners who make their business delivering value for governments with Microsoft software.

Microsoft Connected Government Framework (CGF)

As governments at all levels aspire to the single view of the customer, so do citizens and business demand a single view of the government. Efficient service delivery at the local level increasingly requires deeper connections with government agencies and functions at local and national levels - cross-jurisdictional service delivery, whether this involves a community case worker, a local tourism business, or first responders in an emergency situation, requires agencies to be able to connect to deliver efficient, seamless, citizen focused services.

The Connected Government Framework is a platform which helps local councils support communities while operating in a cost-efficient and compliant manner. It provides a set of solution scenarios designed to solve the needs of a particular aspect of a local government's IT requirements; the scenarios include a secured managed infrastructure, enabling business integration, improving case worker productivity, and enriching the citizen connection.
